New Design Configuration Wins Top Honors at 2009 International Road Federation Awards Competition

T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, is proud to announce that the Sanhao Bridge in Shenyang, China, is the winner of the International Road Federation (IRF) 2009 Global Road Achievement Award (GRAA) for Design. Designed by TYLI’s Chongqing office, this signature cable-stayed bridge features two unique steel arch shaped towers that resemble a butterfly. The prestigious design award recognizes “outstanding achievements in the broad design arena, including aesthetics, applications in challenging environments, cost efficiency and originality.”

The Sanhao Bridge is a new design configuration for cable-supported bridges wherein cables are used to impart additional strength to a girder bridge that, alone, would not be able to attain a given span length. Upon news of the award, TYLI Chairman of the Board, Dr. Man-Chung Tang, who conceptualized the partially cable-stayed girder bridge design acknowledged, “With the completion of the Sanhao Bridge, we have achieved yet another engineering milestone. TYLI addressed the City of Shenyang’s need for a design that would both impact people visually and also inspire a spirit of innovation—the kind of innovation that TYLI engineers have embraced for decades. We strove to encapsulate beauty and simplicity in a structure, and in doing so, raised the engineering practice to new heights.”

TYLI accepted the engraved IRF GRAA crystal trophy on January 11, 2010 at IRF’s Annual Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C. Over 200 road professionals and government officials gathered for this event to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the road industry. Winner profiles can be found on the IRF website located at: http://www.irfnews.org/awards/current-winners.
