The India Fund, Inc. Announces Earnings For The Nine Months Ended September 30, 2009

The India Fund, Inc. (NYSE: IFN; the “Fund”), a closed-end management investment company that seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in equity securities of Indian companies, today announced unaudited results for the nine months ended September 30, 2009.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2009, the Fund’s net realized losses were $18,615,494 and the net change in unrealized gains was $554,396,536. Net investment income for the nine months ended September 30, 2009 was $850,424. For the same nine month period ended September 30, 2008, the Fund's net realized gains and net change in unrealized losses were $256,104,787 and $1,566,378,981, respectively. Net investment loss was $992,689.

On September 30, 2009, total net assets of the Fund were $1,481,749,848, and the net asset value (“NAV”) per share was $30.20 based on 49,069,114 shares outstanding. The Fund's common stock closed on the New York Stock Exchange on September 30, 2009 at $29.05 per share, representing a discount of 3.81% to the Fund’s September 30, 2009 NAV. On September 30, 2008, total net assets of the Fund were $1,276,504,874, and the NAV per share was $33.27 based on 38,371,385 shares outstanding. The Fund's common stock closed on the New York Stock Exchange on September 30, 2008, at $32.82 per share, representing a discount of 1.35% to the Fund’s September 30, 2008 NAV.

In April 2003, stockholders of the fund voted to adopt an interval fund structure, pursuant to which the Fund conducts semi-annual repurchase offers for between 5% and 25% of the Fund’s outstanding common stock.

During the nine months ended September 30, 2009 the Fund conducted two repurchase offers. The first repurchase offer commenced on February 20, 2009 and expired on March 13, 2009. In connection with the repurchase offer, the Fund purchased 160,011 shares of capital stock at a total cost of approximately $2,658,430, net of a 2% repurchase fee of $49,315. The second repurchase offer commenced on August 21, 2009 and expired on September 11, 2009. In connection with the repurchase offer, the Fund purchased 1,023,575 shares of capital stock at a total cost of approximately $29,953,719, net of a 2% repurchase fee of $606,571.

On September 30, 2009, investments in equity securities of Indian companies totaled $1,362,712,036 (or 91.97% of the Fund's net assets), investments in U.S. securities totaled $2,168,826 (or 0.15% of the Fund’s net assets), investments in Exchange Traded Notes totaled $22,487,688 (or 1.52% of the Fund’s net assets), investments in Exchange Traded Funds totaled $16,618,634 (or 1.12% of the Fund’s net assets), investments in rights totaled $42,241 (or 0.00% of the Fund’s net assets), and investments in cash and cash equivalents including foreign currencies totaled $93,941,759 (or 6.34% of the Fund's net assets). Liabilities in excess of other assets totaled $16,221,336 (or 1.10% of the Fund's net assets), accounting for the remaining net assets.
