Willamette University’s (WU) Atkinson Graduate School of Management awarded Willamette Valley Vineyards’ (WVV) (Nasdaq:WVVI) President and Founder Jim Bernau its annual Glenn L. Jackson Leadership Award at the university’s commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 17. The award was presented to Bernau by Gerald Frank, who was the first to receive the award in 1984.
The award is presented annually to an individual in business or government who has shown leadership in improving existing conditions, has worked to promote the values of entrepreneurship (innovation, creativity, productivity, quality of life), and has demonstrated action. Recipients are leaders who recognize the importance of public-private partnerships and who work to provide leadership in both sectors.
WU Atkinson School Dean and JELD-WEN Professor of Free Enterprise Debra J. Ringold noted it was a honor to present the university’s coveted award to a worthy recipient and friend.
“It’s an honor to present our long-time friend and colleague, Jim Bernau, with the Glenn L. Jackson Award,” Ringold said. “The award is a Willamette tradition and a testament to Jim’s entrepreneurial spirit, innovative practices, outstanding leadership, and tremendous contributions to Oregon’s economy.”
Bernau said he was honored to receive the award, particularly as it was given to him by the university’s original honoree.
“It was such an honor to have this award presented to me by Gerry Frank, who was the first recipient 25 years ago,” Bernau stated. “Willamette’s Graduate School was the perfect setting in which to receive this honor as it was my professors there who helped me write my business plan for the winery 28 years ago.”
Willamette Valley Vineyards was founded in 1983 by Bernau after an inspirational visit to the west-to-south facing slope of volcanic flow in Turner, Ore., where the winery is now situated. Best known for its acclaimed Pinot Noir, WVV wines are distributed throughout the United States, Canada, and the Pacific Rim. WVV manages 300 acres of vines, which are all certified sustainable, LIVE and Salmon Safe. As Oregon’s only publicly held winery, the winery is listed on NASDAQ under the symbol WVVI.
