Kleinfeld Tells RTI Niles: “Get Ready For More Business”

Continuing his RTI site tour, Klaus Kleinfeld visited the facility that started it all—RTI Niles, located outside of Youngstown and not far from Cleveland, Ohio. Joined by Olivier Jarrault, Eric Roegner, Gerhard Kschwendt and Christa Bowers, the team toured RTI’s main titanium operations, learning about its production of titanium ingot and rolled products—some of which Alcoa already uses to produce forged parts, including the bulkheads and spars for the F35 Joint Strike Fighter. While the facility has been in operation since 1951, Klaus noted that he was “impressed with the equipment which includes a lot of modern automation.”

During a Town Hall, Klaus told the employees to “get ready for more business,” given the many synergy opportunities that will result from combining RTI and Alcoa. The combined entity will create a complete mid- and downstream titanium value chain through which Alcoa will be getting more of its titanium supplies from RTI—making RTI a much busier place! In particular, the combined entity will enable a closed scrap loop given RTI’s ability to process all of Alcoa’s titanium revert and chips—including from the former Firth Rixson businesses—generate melted ingot and produce titanium billet for further downstream operations such as closed-die forgings in Cleveland, rings in Rancho Cucamonga and discs in Savannah and the UK. Klaus also emphasized the opportunities that RTI employees will have to share expertise, such as on rolling mill operations, as well as gain potential career opportunities and access to centers of excellence that Alcoa offers as a global organization, with a critical presence in Ohio.

Commenting on the transaction, RTI’s Jim McCarley, Executive Vice President of Operations for RTI International Metals, noted that the deal is “good for RTI, good for Alcoa, and good for shareholders.” The Alcoa team couldn’t agree more.
