NEW YORK, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Mid- and small-capitalization stocks edged higher on Wednesday as early gains evaporated on the heels of a two-day winning streak and uncertainty over Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.
