Barley Labs sponsors online video contest in conjunction with the launch of its national commercial from Intuit’s Small Business Big Game Contest
PRLog - May 12, 2014 - DURHAM, N.C. -- What dog wouldn’t want free treats for the rest of its life?

To celebrate dogs and the launch of its national commercial made possible by the Intuit Quickbooks Small Business Big Game contest, Barley Labs LLC today announced an online video contest where the winner will receive Barley Labs All-natural Dog Treats for the life of their dog and $100 donated to the animal rescue organization of their choice.

“Our business has gained so much from being a top four finalist in the Intuit Small Business Big Game contest,” said Scott Beaudry, co-owner of Barley Labs. “Part of our prize included a national TV commercial that begins airing today. We feel so fortunate, and we wanted to find a fun way to give back to the people and dogs who have supported us.”

That “fun way” is through the Barley Labs Not Drunk. Just Happy. online video contest, which was inspired by the concept of their commercial (click here to watch).

“People always ask us if our treats will get their dogs drunk because they’re made with recycled beer grain,” said Theresa Chu, co-owner of Barley Labs. “Of course they don’t, but the commercial that Intuit and RPA created for our treats plays on that idea and features home videos of dogs doing the kinds of crazy and funny things that make pet parents laugh every day.”

To enter the contest, dog owners must upload a video of their dog doing something funny at www.notdrunkjusthappy.com by 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 26, 2014. The public can vote once every 24 hours between Noon EDT on May 27, 2014, through June 8, 2014, for their favorite video to win.

Chu and Beaudry’s dog Barley, who is also listed as the Chief Inspiration Officer and VP of Quality Control for Barley Labs, influenced another major aspect of the business.

“Without the kindness and hard work of rescue staff and volunteers, we never would have found our girl Barley and this business wouldn’t even exist,” said Chu. “Including a donation as part of the contest prize is just a small way for us to recognize the great work animal rescue organizations do every day.”

Chu and Beaudry launched Barley Labs in September 2012, selling their beer-grain dog treats online and through local retailers. Beaudry came up with the idea shortly after his love for beer turned into an avid home brewing hobby.

"It seemed like such a waste to just toss all the leftover grain from the process," said Beaudry. "I did some research and found I could take that barley and turn it into dog treats. It only seemed fair that if I was making treats for myself, I might as well make some for my dog, too."

Barley Labs works with other local small businesses to create their dog treats. Fullsteam Brewery supplies the barley they use, and Cultured Cow Creamery supplies the cheddar for their cheese treats. Both companies are based in Durham, N.C.
