P&G Celebrates 10 years of Providing Clean Drinking Water and Improving Global Health

The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) honored the critical role P&G’s partners have played in the Company’s efforts to provide safe drinking water and help save lives around the world. The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program (CSDW), which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2014, and the Pampers UNICEF campaign to eliminate maternal and newborn tetanus were the two programs highlighted with specific focus on the roles of CSDW partners AmeriCares and ChildFund and Pampers UNICEF partner Tesco, for their contributions to saving thousands of lives.

“Our company and our brands are committed to these programs and their focus on improving lives around the world,” said Martin Riant, P&G Executive Sponsor, Global Sustainability and Group President – Baby, Feminine, and Family Care. “But we never could have expanded these programs over the past decade to their current level of impact and reach without our tremendous partners.”

CSDW, which began in 2004, works with more than 140 partners around the globe to raise awareness of the clean drinking water crisis and has provided 7.5 billion liters of clean water using P&G Purifier of Water packets to children and families in need.

AmeriCares – an emergency response and global health organization - was recognized for 10 years of collaboration, providing clean drinking water in response to disasters around the world. AmeriCares was one of CSDW’s first partners, responding to the Southeast Asia tsunami and cholera outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa and Bangladesh. Over the past decade, AmeriCares has provided more than 300 million liters of clean drinking water in 25 countries during emergencies and natural disasters.

ChildFund – a 75 year old child-focused international development charity – was awarded for partnering over the past seven years with CSDW to provide clean drinking water to the most vulnerable: young children, people living with HIV/AIDS, and during emergencies in seven countries in Sub Sahara Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. Recently, the program expanded to Brazil, and a ChildFund community received the seven billionth liter of clean water provided through CSDW.

The Pampers UNICEF campaign donates maternal and newborn tetanus vaccines with the aim of eradicating this preventable disease in developing countries. Every year 58,000 babies die within the first month of life from Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. Under the Pampers CGI Commitment to Action, this shopper-focused program has helped donate a total of 300 million vaccines to some of the most at-risk populations around the globe.

Tesco – the UK-based international grocery retailer – was celebrated for its role in raising funds for over 75 million vaccines to help protect 25 million mothers and their babies from this disease. As the biggest retail supporter of the Pampers UNICEF campaign since 2006, Tesco has helped Pampers provide vaccines through strong in-store support; including an exclusive “1 pack = 3 vaccines” promotion.

The CSDW Program and the Pampers UNICEF campaign are two of many P&G programs focused on innovation and action to make every day better for people and the planet. P&G is focused on both environmental and social efforts including conservation of resources, using renewable resources; creating worth from waste, providing the comforts of home, and improving health and hygiene.
