PECO Increases Rebates for Customers Recycling Old, Energy-Guzzling Appliances

PECO has increased the rebate for customers looking to recycle their old refrigerators or freezers through the PECO Smart Appliance Recycling Program. Beginning today, PECO will pay customers $50 – an increase of $15 – for old appliances and offer a $75 rebate for customers to purchase a new, ENERGY STAR® refrigerator.

PECO Smart Appliance Recycling also provides free removal and recycling of the old appliance. Older appliances require as much as three times more electricity to operate than models built to meet current efficiency standards. In addition to the rebate, by removing the refrigerator or freezer, customers can save up to $150 on their energy bill.

“Since the program began in 2009, PECO customer have e recycled more than 40,000 appliances through PECO Smart Appliance Recycling,” said Kathy Lentini, PECO’s Director of Energy & Marketing Services. “We hope to keep up the positive momentum and have more customers take advantage of our increased rebates so they can save money and help reduce electric usage across the greater Philadelphia region.”

PECO Smart Appliance Recycling is part of PECO Smart Ideas, the company’s full suite of energy efficient and rebate programs. Since launching in 2009, PECO Smart Ideas has helped customers save more than $214 million in annual energy costs and reduced customer electric usage by more than 1.2 billion kilowatt hours.

Scheduling a refrigerator or freezer pickup is easy. PECO customers can call 1-888-5-PECO-SAVE or visit http://peco.com/smartideas. To qualify for a refrigerator or freezer pickup, appliances must be:

  • Empty and working at time of pickup
  • Between 10 and 30 cubic feet
  • Accessible with a clear, safe path for removal
  • Adequate street parking in front of your home

Units picked up through the program are transported to an advanced appliance recycling facility operated by JACO Environmental in PECO’s service territory, in Hatfield. JACO safely removes materials from the old appliances that are harmful to the environment, including ozone depleting substances and powerful greenhouse gases. They reclaim 95 percent of the materials for reuse in manufacturing of new appliances.
