Genesee & Wyoming Reports Traffic for November 2014

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) (NYSE:GWR) today reported traffic volumes for November 2014.

G&W’s traffic in November 2014 was 160,669 carloads, an increase of 8,361 carloads, or 5.5%, compared with November 2013. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in November 2014 was 155,582 carloads, an increase of 3,274 carloads, or 2.1%, compared with November 2013.

G&W’s traffic in the fourth quarter of 2014 through November was 335,434 carloads, an increase of 19,297 carloads, or 6.1%, compared with the fourth quarter of 2013 through November. G&W’s same-railroad traffic in the fourth quarter of 2014 through November was 324,231 carloads, an increase of 8,094 carloads, or 2.6%, compared with the fourth quarter of 2013 through November.

Same-railroad Highlights:

The following highlights relate to same-railroad traffic, excluding traffic from the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad, which commenced operations on June 1, 2014.

  • North American traffic increased 4,833 carloads, or 3.6%, primarily due to increased coal & coke and minerals & stone traffic, as well as increased overhead Class 1 shipments, partially offset by decreased petroleum products traffic.
  • Australian traffic decreased 1,559 carloads, or 7.9%, primarily due to decreased agricultural products and intermodal traffic, partially offset by increased minerals & stone traffic.
  • Coal & coke traffic increased 3,462 carloads, or 12.6%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W’s Ohio Valley and Midwest regions.
  • G&W’s Other commodity group traffic increased 3,325 carloads, or 78.4%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
  • Minerals & stone traffic increased 2,794 carloads, or 17.5%, primarily due to increased shipments in G&W’s Australia, Ohio Valley and Northeast regions.
  • Agricultural products traffic decreased 3,069 carloads, or 14.8%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W’s Australia and Ohio Valley regions.
  • Petroleum products traffic decreased 1,624 carloads, or 18.1%, primarily due to decreased crude oil shipments in G&W’s Pacific, Canada and Southern regions.
  • Intermodal traffic decreased 1,043 carloads, or 15.4%, primarily due to a 712 carload decrease in G&W’s Australia and Canada regions. The remaining 313 carload decrease is due to a classification change affecting traffic for a customer in North America that was reported in the intermodal commodity group in the fourth quarter of 2013 through November and has been reported based on the underlying commodity shipped since December 2013.
  • All remaining traffic decreased by a net 571 carloads.

Same-railroad Highlights:

The following highlights relate to same-railroad traffic, excluding traffic from the Rapid City, Pierre & Eastern Railroad, which commenced operations on June 1, 2014.

  • North American traffic increased 11,057 carloads, or 4.0%, primarily due to increased coal & coke and minerals & stone traffic, as well as increased overhead Class 1 shipments, partially offset by decreased agricultural products traffic.
  • Australian traffic decreased 2,963 carloads, or 7.8%, primarily due to decreased agricultural products traffic as a result of shipping delays in South Australian ports and changes in the mix of originating locations served which increased distance and reduced volumes.
  • Coal & coke traffic increased 5,594 carloads, or 10.3%, primarily due to increased steam coal shipments in G&W’s Midwest and Ohio Valley regions.
  • Minerals & stone traffic increased 5,453 carloads, or 15.2%, primarily due to increased shipments across most G&W regions.
  • G&W’s Other commodity group traffic increased 4,330 carloads, or 42.2%, primarily due to overhead Class 1 shipments.
  • Agricultural products traffic decreased 5,225 carloads, or 13.2%, primarily due to decreased shipments in G&W’s Australia and Ohio Valley regions.
  • Intermodal traffic decreased 2,118 carloads, or 15.5%, primarily due to a 1,282 carload decrease in G&W’s Australia and Canada regions. The remaining 836 carload decrease is due to a classification change affecting traffic for a customer in North America that was reported in the intermodal commodity group in the fourth quarter of 2013 through November and has been reported based on the underlying commodity shipped since December 2013.
  • All remaining traffic increased by a net 60 carloads.

Other

Historically, G&W has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income. Car movements related to railcar switching, including activities at port terminals, are excluded from our carload information as the resulting revenues are classified as non-freight.
