Maine Introduces New Electronic Billing System for the Department of Transportation

Businesses that choose to display directional signage on Maine state roads now have a new convenient way to process their annual dues. The Official Business Directional Sign (OBDS) Electronic Billing application is provided by the Maine Department of Transportation in partnership with the state’s e-government portal provider, InforME.

Prior to the launch of this electronic billing system, the Department of Transportation had been using staff to individually contact account holders and mail out a paper invoice. The new application automatically notifies active account holders by email that their invoice is due each January. Users can then log into the system to view their account details including the current amount due.

Customers have the ability to pay with a credit/debit card and upon submittal the system provides immediate confirmation that the payment has been sent to the agency. Accounts that have not been paid by the end of January will be notified again at the beginning of February and March.

“Replacing the current process with an online application that not only notifies the customer, but also records the historical payment information for the account, will provide many new efficiencies for our staff,” stated Dept. of Transportation Commissioner, David Bernhardt. “It really is a great convenience for both businesses and our agency.”
