Northern Trust Donates More Than $15 million in 2014

As Northern Trust marked its 125th anniversary, the firm made $15.4 million in cash contributions last year and its employees reported approximately 125,000 hours of volunteer work in support of nonprofit organizations worldwide.

With a focus on education, social welfare and supporting the arts, Northern Trust reinvested 1.2% of its pre-tax 2014 profits into communities across the globe, remaining well above the median for financial institutions as reported by the CECP and The Conference Board’s report, “Giving in Numbers: 2014 Edition.”

“After 125 years of operation, Northern Trust maintains the principles upon which we were founded – Service, Expertise and Integrity,” Northern Trust Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Waddell said. “A commitment to service in our communities is a value that spans the globe, from North America to our growing footprint across Asia and Europe. I join Northern Trust’s 15,000 employees in taking great pride in our role as a global corporate citizen.”

Earlier this year, Northern Trust also announced plans to honor its 125th anniversary, which was on Aug. 12, 2014, by giving an additional $1.25 million through special grants focused on education. These will be made to nonprofit organizations around the world and awardees will be finalized in May 2015.

Northern Trust’s community programs include charitable grantmaking, strategic sponsorships, employee matching gifts, volunteerism, employee-giving campaigns, nonprofit board leadership, and in-kind contributions. Highlights from 2014 include:

  • Celebrating 125 Years through Volunteerism: Northern Trust challenged employees to volunteer in honor of its 125th anniversary, prompting engagement from employees in 47 global office locations. These efforts included planting 2,000 daffodils in New York City’s Central Park; partnering with Camp for All in Houston, Texas to assist people with special needs; and providing more than 1,300 shoeboxes filled with school supplies for disadvantaged children in the Philippines.
  • Expanding Access to the Arts in Chicago Public Schools: Northern Trust joined other corporate leaders, private foundations and public entities in a new collaborative effort to bring quality arts education to all Chicago Public Schools students through Ingenuity Inc.’s Creative Schools Fund. In 2014, the Fund granted nearly $1 million to 100 schools to help expand and improve instruction around dance, music, theatre and visual arts.
  • Partnering with Hedge Funds to Promote Child Welfare: Engaging locations in London, New York and Chicago, Northern Trust was a global sponsor of Hedge Funds Care. The foundation focuses on the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect worldwide, an issue that affects 10 million children each year in the U.S. alone.
  • Disability Awareness through Art:Hong Chi Association and Northern Trust’s Hong Kong office engaged intellectually disabled children to illustrate their own meaning of “Happiness.” The drawings were made into a 2015 calendar which was distributed to 2,000 Northern Trust clients and employees throughout the region.
