Powdered Alcohol Still a Risk for Alcoholism, Other Concerns, Cautions Chapters Capistrano

With the approval of powdered alcohol or Palcohol to be sold in the United States, Chapters Capistrano highlights ongoing concerns of substance misuse and alcoholism.

Powdered alcohol was introduced several months ago but is just now gaining approval to be sold in the United States. In light of recent rulings, some states have already banned sales and others are attempting to follow suit. Many people are divided on the issue. Chapters Capistrano, an Orange County drug and alcohol rehab center, has released a statement to the press regarding the sale of Palcohol and the continued risk of alcoholism.

“Whether it is in liquid or powder form, it is still alcohol and poses a risk to people’s health,” says Chapters founder Mike Shea. “Putting it in a single-serve packet makes it easily transportable, concealable, and accessible. People will be able to quickly mix up a drink wherever they are and this can become problematic.”

Scientific American cites concerns from New York State Senator Joseph Griffo regarding this new form of alcohol. Griffo noted, “There are very serious concerns about the illegal use of powdered alcohol by young people, possibly even bringing it into schools or other events and locations that prohibit alcohol consumption.” Many communities have been working hard to crack down on the sale and use of alcohol by minors and this introduces yet another challenge, says Shea.

There is also the risk of children getting a hold of the powder and mistaking it for other substances or not realizing that it is dangerous to their health. Parents must be very vigilant about keeping it stored away securely and out of reach. In addition, because it is a powder, it can be easily added to many substances, including other beverages or sprinkling it on food. People may not realize that they are consuming it depending on how it is presented.

“Those in recovery work very hard to minimize temptation and risk,” says Shea. “Palcohol could open doors to alcohol being present in situations where it otherwise shouldn’t be and taking away from the sober environment they have created. It also presents another way for those struggling with alcoholism to conceal use or have easier access to alcohol.” As with any type of substance use, education is essential, adds Shea. People should understand the risks and what they are putting in their body.

“No matter how you look at it, it is still alcohol and can pose the same health risks if not consumed responsibly,” says Shea. “Excessive drinking has physical, mental, social, financial, and emotional ramifications. It also contributes to risk of alcoholism and alcohol poisoning which are serious concerns.” It is never too soon to seek help if drinking is becoming problematic. Chapters Capistrano assists clients at all stages of recovery through customized treatment to meet their needs, notes Shea, so they can feel confident about getting help.
