Tom Hiddleston’s Performance of J. G. Ballard’s High-Rise Now Available as an Audio Download at Audible.com

Audible Studios, a production arm of Audible.com, today announced the release of Tom Hiddleston’s vivid interpretation of J. G. Ballard’s unnerving dystopian novel, High-Rise. The narration by The Avengers star Hiddleston, which anticipates the release of a new film adaptation of the novel in the fall, is available for download at www.audible.com/HighRise.

“I spent last summer holed up as Dr. Laing on the 25th floor of the 'High Rise,' as brought to life on film by Ben Wheatley and Amy Jump,” said Hiddleston. “The book was always, necessarily, our cornerstone. Ahead of the release of the film, it was great to go back to J. G. Ballard's original text and to read it aloud. Ballard was prescient about so many things: our seduction by (and reliance on) technology; our attempted colonization of the sky; and his particular, distinguishing implication that modern civilization is perhaps only a few neighborly disagreements away from collapse and chaos.”

“Because Tom was already immersed in the film version of this modern classic, he was the perfect actor to create the audio version,” said Audible Publisher and EVP Beth Anderson. “His performance is nothing short of remarkable, and listeners will be riveted by how viscerally he brings the terror and mayhem of this story to life.”

The forthcoming film adaptation of High-Rise stars Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller and Elisabeth Moss. High-Rise was first published in 1975.

In addition to Hiddleston, among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Dan Stevens, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet and Tim Robbins. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair.

Audible, the world’s largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2014, listeners around the world downloaded 1.2 billion hours of audio from Audible.com outlets; Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of the year. More than half of current Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.
