Balfour Beatty Construction’s Michael Blount Named President-elect of the Society of American Military Engineers Society’s Board of Direction

The Society for American Military Engineers (SAME) has appointed Balfour Beatty Construction’s Michael Blount as president-elect for its board of direction. Blount serves as a vice president of operations in Balfour Beatty Construction’s Washington, D.C. office. SAME unites architecture, engineering, construction, facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors across the United States to prepare for - and overcome - natural and man-made disasters and to improve security at home and abroad.

Effective May 2015, Blount will serve a one-year term as president-elect in which he will work with SAME national councils and committees, in addition to serving on the board of direction and executive committee to support their activities. Upon completion of his one-year president-elect term, Blount will take on a one-year term as national president of the SAME board of direction starting May 2016, followed by another one-year term as past-president beginning in May 2017.

Blount has identified his personal focus areas for SAME as follows:

  • Develop a robust program of education and outreach to enhance member’s knowledge of infrastructure independence and resiliency;
  • Continue supporting strong Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs. Blount believes the nation is in an AEC education and development crisis and that SAME can make an impact;
  • Continue supporting veteran programs including Wounded Warriors and Veteran Transition;
  • Increase efforts in mentoring younger members. Blount believes the Academy of Fellows has made great progress in the past and is focused on continuously improving these efforts into the future.

Blount joined Balfour Beatty in 2008 following 27 years of service as a captain in the U.S. Navy. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Florida, a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a professional degree in Water Resources from The George Washington University.
