Higher Close As Global Tensions Ease

The markets closed higher with the Dow gaining 88 points to 16,336 as concerns about a global crisis in Ukraine lessened. Nasdaq climbed 53 points to 4333. 

On the upside 

xG Technology (Nasdaq: XGTI) expanded the availability of its xMax broadband networking equipment for wide release.

A Seeking Alpha contributor expects Oculus Innovative Sciences (Nasdaq: OCLS) to double after subsidiary Ruthigen makes its initial public offering.

Shares of BG Medicine (Nasdaq: BGMD) soared ahead of its earnings release on Thursday.

On the downside

Fuel cell makers Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems (Nasdaq: BLDP) extended their losses. 

Investors locked in profits on YOU On Demand (Nasdaq: YOD).

Profit taking weighed down shares of Star Scientific (Nasdaq: STSI).

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 7 to 2 on the NYSE and by more than 3 to 1 on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 climbed 14 points to 1872. Bitcoin eased $3.75 or 0.60% to $616.55.
