Tenet Awarded Medicare Practice Transformation Grant to Advance Clinically Integrated Care

Tenet Healthcare Corporation (NYSE:THC) is one of only 39 organizations nationwide selected to participate in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative. This initiative represents one of the largest federal investments helping physicians and other clinical professionals improve healthcare delivery through nationwide, collaborative, and peer-based learning groups called Practice Transformation Networks.

Tenet’s practice transformation program will be implemented alongside its clinically integrated physician networks in Detroit, Philadelphia, and El Paso, Harlingen and Brownsville, Texas. Through the program, Tenet will receive up to $5.2 million over four years to provide resources to nearly 1,000 affiliated clinicians in predominately underserved communities. The funding will assist with provider education on clinical and population health best practices, support the transition to value-based payment models, and achieve common goals of improved care, better health, and reduced cost.

“Supporting doctors and other healthcare professionals as they change the way they work is critical to improving quality and spending healthcare dollars more wisely,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell. “These awards will give patients more of the information they need to make informed decisions about their care and give clinicians access to information and support to improve care coordination and quality outcomes.”

Since 2009, Tenet’s hospitals have been at the forefront of exploring new Medicare payment models. Currently, Tenet’s hospitals participate in one Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) and six Medicare Shared Savings Program ACOs. In 2016, the company plans to expand participation to include seven new markets, bringing the total number of Medicare beneficiaries to 170,000. Earlier this year, Tenet’s Detroit Medical Center Michigan Pioneer ACO was recognized as the most successful Pioneer ACO in 2014 for benchmark savings improvement.

“This grant will support Tenet’s holistic approach to addressing preventive and disease management, helping patients navigate the healthcare system more efficiently and improving the health and well-being of the communities our physicians and hospitals serve,” said Clint Hailey, Tenet’s chief managed care officer. “We are very pleased that CMS recognized our commitment to innovative healthcare models and we look forward to using the funding to advance clinically integrated care.”
