James Franco Performs Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five for Audible

Audible Studios, a production arm of Audible.com, today released James Franco’s new interpretation of Kurt Vonnegut’s classic satire, Slaughterhouse-Five. This memorable performance by the Academy Award-nominated star of 127 Hours, Pineapple Express, Milk, Freaks and Geeks, and more is the last in a series of definitive Audible Studios recordings of the Vonnegut canon in association with the Vonnegut estate that launched with the June release of Breakfast of Champions, narrated by John Malkovich. The Malkovich and Franco recordings bookend twelve other long-form Vonnegut works and three short-form pieces, all of which are now available for download at www.audible.com/vonnegut.

“As an actor as well as a writer and a reader, the opportunity to perform Vonnegut’s most influential work was incredibly exciting for me,” said Franco. “This is an American classic that stands the test of time. I wanted my interpretation to capture Vonnegut’s vision in all its glory and absurdity, while maintaining the tone and feel that make the book so powerful and enduring.”

“James Franco’s energy and his charismatic voice ignite this explosive, multi-layered classic,” said Audible EVP and Publisher Beth Anderson. “His performance is a not-to-be-missed addition to our definitive catalog of Vonnegut works. We are delighted to give our listeners the opportunity to lose themselves in Kurt Vonnegut’s complex narrative universe for either the first or fiftieth time through these wonderful narrations by Franco, John Malkovich and other talented performers.”

In addition to Franco, among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Jesse Eisenberg, Dan Stevens, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet and Tim Robbins. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair.

Audible, the world’s largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2014, listeners around the world downloaded 1.2 billion hours of audio from Audible.com outlets; Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of the year. Two thirds of new Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.
