GameStop Now Owns and Operates 1,000 Technology Brand Stores Nationwide

GameStop, a family of specialty retail brands that make the most popular technologies affordable and simple, today celebrated a significant milestone opening its 1,000th technology brand store. With this announcement, the family of specialty retail brands now boasts the title of largest video game retailer in the world, as well as the largest AT&T authorized retailer and largest Apple-authorized specialist in the United States.

GameStop launched its new Technology Brands segment in 2013 when it acquired Simply Mac, the largest certified reseller of Apple products, and Spring Mobile, the fastest growing AT&T authorized retailer of wireless services. GameStop expanded its technology brands later that year by entering into a strategic dealer agreement with Cricket Wireless, an AT&T subsidiary offering premium non-contract wireless service. Since its first technology brand acquisition in 2013, the specialty retailer has grown its Technology Brands holdings by 588 percent, adding more than 450 locations this year alone.

“It is incredibly gratifying to reach this milestone because it means the very best in high-quality, affordable Apple and AT&T products and wireless plans are now available to even more customers across the country,” said Jason Ellis, senior vice president of Technology Brands for GameStop. “Each new store opening reinforces our goal of expanding our national footprint to address the insatiable demand for value, variety and convenience to customers in markets that previously have been underserviced.”

Spring Mobile is responsible for advancing much of the GameStop’s Technology Brands growth. Its rapid growth has been unprecedented in the wireless reseller industry and is evident of the ever-growing demand for AT&T products and services. The Utah-based retailer of AT&T wireless phones and services has acquired 27 AT&T dealers and 433 new doors under the GameStop umbrella. This year, Spring Mobile acquired 69 stores in northern California from Parrot Cellular, 56 stores in Oregon and Washington from Smart Wireless and 50 stores in Florida from Nobile Communications, among other deals. The purchases this year strengthened the brand’s concentration in the West and expanded it into seven new states – Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

With continued investments, GameStop’s Technology Brands segment will continue to expand rapidly toward its goal of generating $1.5 billion in revenues by 2019.
