Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) will pay a premium of approximately $5.8 billion in cash to acquire Alere Inc. (NYSE: ALR). Shares of Abbott Laboratories rose 60 cents to close at $38.45 while Alere stock leaped $16.91 to close at $54.11.
