‘LEAP’ Into the New Year with a New Medicare Advantage Plan

Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is encouraging people with Medicare to take advantage of the extra day this Leap Year to explore Medicare Advantage plans to find the plan that best meets their needs.

Medicare Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) are times when eligible people may change their Medicare health care coverage. Some of this year’s SEPs only run through Feb. 29, 2016.

In celebration of Leap Day, Humana is inviting anyone who is eligible to “LEAP” into a new year by considering changing their Medicare Advantage plan. To switch:

  • Learn if you are eligible
  • Explore your options
  • Align with the right Medicare Advantage plan for you
  • Put it in motion!

“It’s important to know that some people are eligible to change their Medicare Advantage plan this year,” said George Renaudin, Humana Medicare Segment Vice President. “With some special enrollment periods ending soon, we want to encourage people to learn as much as they can and explore their options when making an important decision about their health care plan.”

Some examples of people who may be eligible are those whose current Medicare plan did not renew in 2016, or whose retirement benefits were discontinued Dec. 31, 2015, or anyone whose existing Medicare plan received a 2.5 STAR quality rating or below for three consecutive years.

STAR ratings judge the quality of plans in several categories, including preventive care, managing chronic conditions, member experience, member complaints and customer service. STAR ratings are based on a five-star scale and can change each year. STAR ratings for 2016 Medicare plans are available at www.medicare.gov.

People turning 65 or retiring after the age of 65 or who become eligible due to disability may also enroll in a Medicare plan. There is a seven-month window when someone is first entitled to Medicare Parts A and B in which to enroll in a Medicare plan, after which financial penalties may apply. Anyone retiring after the age of 65 who previously received health care coverage through their employer has an eight-month window to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B.

There are also special circumstances that may qualify someone to enroll in a Medicare plan this year.

Many of Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans are highly rated. In fact, 2.4 million Humana Medicare Advantage members have plans with 4-plus STAR ratings, the most of any Medicare Advantage carrier in 2016.*

Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans also typically cover everything Medicare covers and more, including programs to improve health and manage chronic conditions – like the SilverSneakers Fitness Program – and coverage for eye exams and preventive dental care.** While most Humana Medicare Advantage plans also include prescription drug coverage, there are plans available that don’t include Part D benefits.
