PG&E Named No. 2 Utility Among 100 Best Corporate Citizens for 2016

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has again been named to the 100 Best Corporate Citizens list by Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine.

PG&E earned the No. 2 position among utility companies, and was ranked 39th overall, up from 58th place in 2015.

“We’re honored to be recognized for our commitment to help create a clean energy economy through sustainable business practices. Earning a position on the 100 Best Corporate Citizens list for a second year in a row is a reflection of our efforts to protect the environment, promote high standards for diversity and inclusion, and build a better California for our customers and communities,” said PG&E Corporation Chairman and CEO Tony Earley.

So far in 2016, PG&E was also named as one of the best places to work by the Human Rights Campaign, corporation of the year by the United Negro College Fund/Northern California Leadership Council, and one of the best employers for veterans by Military Times.

Companies that made the 100 Best Corporate Citizens list were evaluated on 260 data points across seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relations, governance, philanthropy/community support, human rights and financial performance. Those selected successfully demonstrated, through publicly available data, their robust efforts to drive disclosure, policy and performance in these categories. PG&E ranked among the top five companies in employee relations; among the top 10 companies in environment and philanthropy; and ranked 11th in climate change.

“Congratulations to those honored on this year’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens list for their commitment to corporate responsibility. This annual list is the only ranking that doesn’t rely on self-reporting. Each year, we measure the most transparent companies who report on their responsible practices. Our goal is to advance corporate accountability and responsibility,” said CEO of CR Magazine and SharedXpertise, Elliot Clark.

PG&E is committed to doing even more to achieve a low-carbon economy and preserve a healthy planet for future generations, including:

  • Delivering some of the nation’s cleanest energy with nearly 55 percent of our electricity coming from sources that produce zero greenhouse gases, including nuclear, hydro and renewables
  • Using state-of-the-art detection technology to find and eliminate methane leaks in our natural gas distribution system
  • Connecting more rooftop solar and doing it faster than any utility in the nation
  • Exploring solutions such as large-scale battery banks and compressed air storage systems to smooth natural cycles of sun and wind power
  • Investing $100 million over the next five years to electrify our vehicle fleet
  • Convening a new external Sustainability Advisory Council to help guide our sustainability efforts

All data was collected and analyzed by IW Financial, a Portland, Maine-based financial analysis firm serving the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) investment community. The full list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens is posted on CR Magazine's website.
