Silver Spring Networks Announces StarfishTM Rollout in London

Today, ahead of Internet of Things World, Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE:SSNI) announced the latest deployment of StarfishTM – Silver Spring’s international Internet of Things (IoT) network service – in London. Silver Spring is working with its go-to-market partner, urbancontrol, a new company within the DW Windsor Group, beginning with deployment of IoT and smart city applications for the Westminster City Council.

The Starfish deployment will create a wireless IPv6 mesh canopy across Westminster that can be used for an expanding range of IoT applications. Westminster is home to some of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK including Buckingham Palace, Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral. As part of the Westminster ‘Smart Signs’ program, the Council will initially connect over 4,000 lighted signs and traffic poles to reduce operational costs and improve public safety.

“Westminster is taking an innovative approach to managing their assets to create even greater efficiencies and experiences by leveraging a two-way digital communication platform,” said Stuart Wilson, Director of urbancontrol. “Our hope is that other boroughs will adopt proven technology and open standards in order to provide a seamless experience for the public throughout London, as they consider their long-terms plans for additional smart city and IoT services.”

“By embracing IoT technology, cities can enhance the sharing of information between people and their city to deliver a more efficient, prosperous and economically thriving community,” said Eric Dresselhuys, Executive Vice President of Global Development, Silver Spring Networks. “We are pleased to be able to offer these solutions to Westminster through urbancontrol, and encourage other city leaders and local authorities throughout London to drive their own initiatives forward through a multi-application IoT platform that has a track record of delivering such benefits.”

With Starfish, city departments, public lighting operators, highway and transportation administrations, utilities, commercial enterprises and developers can access a public IoT network platform backed by service level agreements (SLAs) to connect industrial IoT devices. In addition to London, Silver Spring intends to deploy Starfish in Bristol, Chicago, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Kolkata, San Antonio and San Jose. Silicon Valley-headquartered Silver Spring has already delivered 23.6 million devices across five continents using its proven, scalable and secure network technology.
