Silver Spring Networks Hosts StarfishTM ‘Developer Day’

Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (NYSE:SSNI) today hosted its inaugural ‘Developer Day’ in San Jose for third parties to leverage StarfishTM, Silver Spring’s public cloud Internet of Things (IoT) network service. Starfish is a proven, reliable and secure network and data platform that will help developers, entrepreneurs, device makers, and academics support and accelerate the development of new IoT devices and services such as smart city, smart energy, resource conservation, and other applications for public and commercial use. Silver Spring’s Developer Days are full-day, hands-on workshops where each participant receives a Silver Spring Starfish Hardware Developer Kit and secure access to Silver Spring’s data platform. Silver Spring will host a follow-up event in San Jose on Tuesday, June 28, where participants will showcase their prototypes and compete for awards.

“We believe that boosting IoT development through proven IPv6 networks will drive solutions for some of society’s most pressing challenges,” said Philippe Gaglione, EVP, Internet of Things/Starfish platform, Silver Spring Networks. “Many network alternatives making noise in the industry do not have the footprint or capabilities to securely and reliably connect critical infrastructure for the IoT. By leveraging Silver Spring’s standards-based public cloud platform, we’re giving developers and makers the opportunities to get out in the industry and turn their ideas into reality, using a foundation that is proven, reliable, and secure.”

Building on Silver Spring’s proven track record of 23.6 million devices delivered on five continents, Starfish includes standards-based IEEE 802.15.4g wireless interoperability standard (Wi-SUN), speeds up to 2.4 Mbps, 10 millisecond latency, up to 50 miles in point-to-point range, and multiple network transports. As a part of Starfish, Silver Spring offers a free entry service plan – Haiku™ – which includes 5000 messages x 16 bytes per month, ideal for users with smaller data needs who want to access a proven IoT network service to develop new IoT applications for the industry.

In addition to ramping up its deployment in San Jose, Silver Spring intends to deploy Starfish in Bristol, Chicago, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Kolkata, London, and San Antonio. Silver Spring is planning to engage third parties for Developer Days in each city with Starfish coverage.
