Rio Reality-Check: U.S. Olympians Team up with TD Ameritrade to Surprise Top Teen Athletes

TD Ameritrade again teams up with U.S. Olympians to support and mentor the “next generation” of athletes. Leveraging its relationship with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), TD Ameritrade is the only official sponsor to match U.S. Olympians with up-and-coming athletes who have their sights set on competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In coordination with the USOC and the National Governing Bodies, four 2020 U.S. Olympic hopefuls were identified as top athletes in their sports and surprised with a special message from TD Ameritrade, delivered by a U.S. Olympian. Each hopeful will receive mentoring, education and training opportunities, as well as a trip to Rio to cheer on Team USA and experience the Games firsthand.

To pull off the reveal, the 2020 Team USA hopefuls were told they would be participating in a “special” training session. While working out, the young athletes were greeted by U.S. Olympians David Boudia, Chaunte Lowe, David Oliver and Mariel Zagunis who helped pull off the surprises of a lifetime.

2020 U.S. Olympic Hopefuls and Mentor Match-up:

  • Tia Jones, age 15 and U.S. Olympian Chaunte Lowe, Track & Field
  • Damion Thomas, age 16 and U.S. Olympian David Oliver, Track & Field
  • Jordan Windle, age 17 and U.S. Olympian David Boudia, Diving
  • Sylvie Binder, age 16 and U.S. Olympian Mariel Zagunis, Fencing

“Having the right support system is critical whether you’re an Olympian vying to compete in Rio this summer, or among the next generation of athletes who look up to them,” said Denise Karkos, chief marketing officer, TD Ameritrade. “TD Ameritrade is proud to support these incredible U.S. Olympians who will serve as role models, showing younger athletes the importance of staying focused in order to meet long-term goals. We’re equally excited to work closely with this group of 2020 U.S. hopefuls’ respective National Governing Bodies and the USOC to offer them education and training opportunities, including spending time with their mentors and experiencing the Games firsthand in Rio.”

U.S. Olympic high jumper Chaunte Lowe has competed in three Olympic Games and will mentor 15-year-old track & field standout, Tia Jones. Jones, along with the other hopefuls, will travel to Rio and get the opportunity to attend the Opening Ceremony and experience the Olympic Games, firsthand, without the pressure of competing. “I remember my first Olympic Games, I didn't know what to expect and I was in shock when I got there,” said Lowe. “I think I could have really benefited from having somebody mentor me, and help me prepare mentally, so I was more confident and focused on doing my best out there on the track.”

TD Ameritrade #LikeYou Olympic Campaign: Athlete or Investor, Everyone Has a Dream

TD Ameritrade will feature the U.S. Olympic hopefuls in a campaign designed to raise awareness about the tools and support available to help investors pursue their goals. While the 2020 U.S. hopefuls have a singular focus of someday competing in the Olympics, TD Ameritrade supports all investors working toward their own “someday” goal, whether it’s sending children to college, buying a dream house or retiring on a beach.

The #LikeYou campaign will feature a number of everyday TD Ameritrade clients as well as a roster of sponsored U.S. Olympians who also are long-time clients. These athletes use TD Ameritrade’s platform tools – which are available to all clients – for trading, investing and managing their portfolios. While U.S. Olympians can perform amazing athletic feats, TD Ameritrade levels the playing field when it comes to planning and pursuing financial goals.

Active Traders:

  • Chaunte Lowe, three-time U.S. Olympic high jumper
  • Bob and Mike Bryan, three-time U.S. Olympic doubles tennis players

Long-term Investors:

  • Mariel Zagunis, U.S. Olympic gold medal fencer
  • David Boudia, U.S. Olympic gold medal diver
  • David Oliver, U.S. Olympic bronze medal hurdler

“We chose the campaign theme #LikeYou because, like millions of individuals and families, these athletes are on a journey to fulfill their dreams both in competition and in their financial lives,” added Karkos. “We will be cheering for them as they turn those dreams into achievements, just like we cheer for investors every day.”
