Northern Trust Announces Two Leaders Elected Fellows of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel

Northern Trust announced today that Svetlana V. Bekman, Senior Legal Counsel, and Stacy E. Singer, Central Region Trust & Advisor Practice Executive, have been elected Fellows of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel (ACTEC). They join five others from Northern Trust who have previously been elected ACTEC fellows, including Susan D. Snyder, Trust Counsel and Associate General Counsel, Suzanne L. Shier, Chief Wealth Planning and Tax Strategist, Tami F. Conetta, East Region Trust and Advisory Practice Executive, R. Hugh Magill, Chief Fiduciary Officer, and Jane G. Ditelberg, Assistant General Counsel, Trust.

ACTEC is a professional organization of lawyers who have demonstrated the highest level of integrity, commitment to the profession, competence and experience as trust and estate counselors. Fellows are selected on the basis of experience, professional reputation and ability in the fields of trusts and estates and on the basis of having made substantial contributions to these fields through lecturing, writing, teaching and bar activities.

Svetlana V. Bekman is a Senior Vice President and Senior Legal Counsel at Northern Trust, where she advises the bank on matters relating to trusts, estates, IRAs, and related fiduciary matters. Prior to joining Northern Trust, Bekman was a partner in the Private Clients Group of Schiff Hardin LLP. She speaks and publishes articles and chapters on various aspects of IRAs and other retirement plans. Most recently, she wrote articles for the American Bankers Association Trust Letter and the ACTEC Law Journal, and spoke at the Chicago Estate Planning Council, the 58th Annual Estate Planning Short Course for the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education, and the 37th Annual Duke University Estate Planning Conference. Bekman holds a B.A. from Brown University and a M.A. from the University of Oxford. She received her law degree from the Northwestern University School of Law and served as a clerk to the Honorable Elaine E. Bucklo (U.S. District Court of the Northern District of Illinois).

Stacy E. Singer is a Senior Vice President, Central Region Trust and Advisory Practice Executive and National Director of Estate Settlement Services at Northern Trust, where she works closely with trust professionals on all aspects of the delivery of fiduciary services to clients. Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2003, she was a Vice President in the Estate Administration Division at Harris Trust & Savings Bank, where she handled the administration of decedent, minors and disabled estates. Prior to Harris, she was a member of the estate and succession planning department at Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, P.C., where she specialized in estate and succession planning strategies, estate and trust administration and guardianship for minors and disabled adults. She has been appointed as a Guardian ad Litem in both decedent and disabled estates and as a Special Administrator in decedent estates. Singer is the incoming President of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Estate Planning Council. She served on the faculty of the American Bankers Association National Trust School for five years, as an adjunct professor in the LLM Program for Tax and Employee Benefits at The John Marshall Law School and is past chair of the Chicago Bar Association Trust Law Committee. She is a regular speaker for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education and the American Law Institute (formerly ALI-ABA) and frequently speaks before a broad spectrum of civic and professional groups, including the Internal Revenue Service. She has written extensively for numerous publications, including Trusts & Estates, Advancing Philanthropy, Estate Planning and numerous IICLE publications. Singer holds a B.A., with distinction, from the University of Michigan and received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1992. She is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and of the Professional Advisory Committee of the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, the Technion Institute and the Hadley School for the Blind.
