Siemens & Detroit Manufacturers Offer High School Students Intern-for-a-Day Opportunity

Siemens and Electro-Matic Products, Inc. will host its annual Manufacturing in America conference in Detroit, March 22-23, where more than 2,000 leaders from industry and academia attend for best practice sharing. As part of the 2017 program, being held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, high school students will participate in seminars about careers in manufacturing. Siemens has added the opportunity for high school students to apply for a one-day internship with local manufacturers for a hands-on learning experience.

By 2025, there will be two million unfilled manufacturing jobs, predicts a study by the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting. Millennials are currently the largest population and there is a need to bridge the skills gap and change perceptions about manufacturing careers in order to fill the two million+ job openings with excited, engaged millennials who are ready to be part of our companies in the future.

What: Manufacturing in America Student Zone

When: March 23, 2017, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Where: Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center

Already, participation is set to double from last year, with more than 150 students signed up to take advantage of the hands-on experience to learn about careers in manufacturing. The Student Zone includes:

• Industry guest speaker, GM – Ofori Agboka (Director of HR – NA), will kick off the event discussing the need for reinvestment in manufacturing with skilled workforce.
• A tour of the MiA exhibits where students will have the opportunity to engage with industry members regarding latest technological trends.
• A CNC (Computer Numerical Control) workshop discussing what a CNC machine is and how it’s used in industry today, and the skills needed to support this tool of advanced manufacturing, utilizing an actual CNC onsite to manufacture an example part used in industry.
• A PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) workshop using a traffic light simulator to give students a hands-on opportunity to program and operate a traffic light using Siemens automation controls.
• “A Day in the Life” where students will hear about the typical day from an engineer.

At the conclusion of the event, students that are interested in the one-day internship will be provided with the information to apply for the opportunity.
