American Water and Campbell Soup Company Named Among World’s Most Sustainable Corporations

Camden corporate and community neighbors American Water, the largest publicly-traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, and Campbell Soup Company have been named on Corporate Knights 16th annual Global 100 list of the World’s Most Sustainable Corporations. American Water is ranked number 16 and is the only water utilities company on the list; Campbell Soup Company is ranked number 93 and is one of only two U.S. food companies included.

“Through their dedication to sustainability, American Water and Campbell Soup Company are showing, yet again, their commitments to being conscious corporate partners to the city of Camden,” said Camden Mayor Frank Moran. “These two companies embody the environmental awareness and social responsibility that we encourage in our city’s businesses. Here in Camden, we are proud to be home to two of the world’s most sustainable corporations.”

Corporate Knights, a Canadian media, research and financial products company, ranks corporate sustainability performance in its Global 100 list based on metrics covering resource, employee and financial management, along with clean revenue. Corporate Knights analyzed 7,395 companies with more than $1 billion (USD) in revenue to create the 2020 index. American Water and Campbell Soup Company were among 17 U.S. companies on the list.

“At American Water, we are dedicated to the principles of ESG. We know that what we do is critical for the lives of the millions of people we serve every day,” said Susan Story, CEO of American Water. “For us, it is all about sustainability in its broadest term—for our people, our customers, our communities and our planet. This commitment of purpose is shared by all of our employees, and we are very proud to be included in the Global 100 Index as a recognition of our efforts in Camden and across the U.S.”

“We are honored to have our sustainability efforts acknowledged by Corporate Knights. This recognition is a testament to the Campbell employees who drive our sustainability programs and act as good stewards of the natural resources we all share,” said Mark Clouse, Campbell’s President and CEO. “I’m proud of the progress we have made and the positive impact we have had in Camden and all of our hometown communities.”

The recognition of two Camden-based companies highlights the city’s continued efforts to prioritize sustainability in its business practices. While this year is American Water’s debut on the list, Campbell Soup Company celebrates its 5th year of recognition, furthering the companies’ work towards making Camden a more sustainable business hub.
