Is shipping container living the new norm in London? The London housing crisis has been well-publicized. Many cities all around the world found themselves in the same situation. The number of homeless is growing every day. We found ourselves contemplating what we can do about the homeless crisis. As we all know, the answer is not easy. However, there are thousands of abandoned shipping containers that no longer serve a useful purpose. Could they be turned into homes?

There is every possibility abandoned shippers containers can be turned into homes. You can even link up several of them to create a multi-story home. That is a great idea, but when it comes to London, where are we going to place them. Perhaps that is not such an issue after all. If smaller cities such as Venice manage to find surface space for abandoned shipping container homes, why can’t London?

As a matter of fact, there are many abandoned and neglected locations in and around London that would make great sites for shipping container homes. As always, there are challenges that have to be met. It is often hard to trace the owners of the land. Other landowners are reluctant to donate land to shipping container developments or any other type of development. They know if they hang on to their land, they will eventually get the price they are asking for it.

What are the alternatives? Perhaps it is about we took a look at alternative spaces such as railway lines or Underground stations that are no longer in use. You would never have thought it, but there are, in fact, a lot of abandoned public land in London. Underground stations no longer in use make up a lot of the available space. Is all of it below ground? No, it is not. It may surprise you, but a lot of the space available is above ground. Why not make use it of it and ask residents to help to look after wildlife in the local area? That would go down a treat with many people now living on the streets of London.

Why has so much available space in London been abandoned? There are many answers to that question. But, the most common answer is that a lot of this land has been abandoned because it is too expensive to maintain. Instead of looking after the land, the land has been left to go back to nature. Although this is not a bad idea, letting the land go back to nature does not help the London housing crisis. Putting community schemes into place that allow Londoners living space and look after nature at the same time, is not such an outrageous idea as it may seem. At least councils would get some ground rent and it would help to keep people of the streets. Did you know that to buy a shipping container can cost less than £2,000? Put a couple together and you will have a family-sized home.
