The corrected release reads:

HONEYWELL ANALYTICS GAS DETECTION TECHNOLOGY BACKS-UP TAKE DOWN OF ROGUE U.S. SPY SATELLITE

Honeywell Analytics gas detection technology played a critical backup role in the recent shooting down of a rogue U.S. spy satellite in outer space. The satellite, which was carrying over 1,000 tons of hydrazine, a highly toxic corrosive chemical used in rocket propulsion, was successfully taken out of operation on February, 2008, by a single missile 133 nautical miles in space over the Pacific, according to the US Defense Department. Honeywell Analytics deployed its Single Point Monitor (SPM) at over 24 FEMA locations throughout the United States to monitor for hydrazine in the event the chemical was attached to any debris that fell to earth.

The Honeywell SPM is a proven monitor of hydrazine to the parts per billion (ppb) gas concentration levels, said Nelson Rivera, Honeywell Analytics Marketing Manager. In fact, our SPM monitor has been used by NASA for hydrazine monitoring applications since the 1970s.

The USS Lake Erie, a guided missile cruiser, fired a single modified tactical SM-3 missile (Standard Missile), according to the Pentagon. Satellite debris will re-enter the Earths atmosphere immediately because of the relatively low altitude at which the satellite was intercepted, said Rivera. The Pentagon has said that most of it will burn up on re-entry within two days, but it could take up to 40 days for all the debris to re-enter. The SPM will monitor and check for the hydrazine.

The problem with hydrazine is that it is extremely toxic. Low level exposure causes coughing and lung and throat irritation. Higher levels produce tremors or convulsions, nausea and drowsiness. Its nasty stuff, Rivera said, so much so that astronauts in the Space Shuttle are required to remain inside until special air-sniffing trucks are dispatched to the site around the space vehicle to ensure hydrazine hasnt leaked from the exhaust ports.

Effective hydrazine monitoring requires a sensing technology that is fast and responsive just what Honeywell Analytics Single Point Monitor uses with its patented Chemcassette® technology. A special chemically impregnated paper tape highly specific to hydrazine reacts extremely fast to the gas. This proof of evidence detection shows a change in color or stain on the paper if the gas is present. The chemical methods were specially formulated and developed over 25 years of testing in controlled laboratory environments, as well as in industrial field uses, Rivera pointed out. Besides hydrazine, there are paper tapes for 32 other kinds of gases, as well as chemicals and odors.
