Baby Boomers Say No to Do-It-Yourself and Yes to Do-It-For-Me

By: PRLog
When it comes to organizing their homes, baby boomers are less Do-It-Yourselfers and more Do-It-For-ME's as they will gladly pay to get rid of their clutter.
OAKLAND, Calif. - Feb. 4, 2016 - PRLog -- While hundreds of businesses from auto insurers to supermarkets tout the benefits of getting organized to their customers, Lis McKinley, an Oakland, California-based Professional Organizer, believes when people say they want to "get" organized, what they really mean, is they want to "be" organized.

"When you live in your home for 20, 30 or more years, raising a family or taking care of aging parents, you're going to have a lot of stuff. This is just reality for most people in their 50s and 60s. They're not hoarders - they're just like everyone else but the idea of dealing with all their accumulated stuff is overwhelming," says Ms. McKinley, who has seen her share of clutter over the past eight years in business.

The big question for many aging baby boomers is whether or not they are going to deal with the problem of downsizing while they can still be involved. When they don't or can't they often end up passing off the problem to their children or even to friends if they don't have family nearby.

"I don't know what I would have done if I had to do this alone," says Julie Lenhart, a retired health care professional and client of Ms. McKinley's who sold her home in Pleasanton, California to retire to New Mexico where the cost of living and other lifestyle factors were more attractive to her. Ms. Lenhart hired Ms. McKinley's company, LET'S MAKE ROOM, to help her with the overwhelming task of downsizing her 4-bedroom home so she could sell it to pay for a new home in New Mexico.

“My realtor told me he couldn't put it on the market until I dealt with all my stuff and while I tried, I eventually realized I needed help."

Like many boomers looking at their future, Ms. Lenhart needed to reduce her expenses if she wanted to maintain her assets well into her retirement. This led to her decision to move to New Mexico where she still has many connections.

It took Ms. McKinley's team just over a week to get everything sorted, donated, sold and decluttered in Ms. Lenhart's home including long forgotten items belonging to her parents. When it was done, she told her Realtor she wanted to "test the waters" to see if there was any interest in her home. She sold it the first day it was listed.

"If your roof needed replacing would you do it yourself?" Ms. McKinley asks. Home improvement projects, especially large organizing projects, are no different in many ways from a home remodel, says McKinley. "People who want it done will pay to get it done if it's worth it to them."
