Big Brother Style To Help New University Of Derby Students

Hit reality show the inspiration for new student information film

‘BIG BROTHER’ STYLE TO HELP NEW UNIVERSITY OF DERBY STUDENTS

A UK university is using a ‘Big Brother’ style film to teach new arrivals about life in student halls.

As part of their ‘welcome meeting’ when they arrive at the University of Derby, they will see a short film explaining the rules and regulations associated with life in halls, shot in the style of the hit reality show.

It’s the brainchild of the university’s Student Living department and Stoke-on-Trent-based film production company The Maclagan Men, who believe the new arrivals will be familiar with the fly-on-the-wall approach and therefore engage more easily with the material.

The Maclagan Men’s MD John Rosie said: “These students are from the Big Brother generation and have grown up with the programme, which makes it easier for them to engage with our film.

“It will also be posted on the university’s website as a resource for anyone interested in studying at Derby in future.”

Entitled ‘Welcome to Halls’, the film follows four students - ‘Linda’, ‘George’, ‘Shane’ and ‘Carey’ - through their day-to-day lives in halls, commenting on certain events from the Diary Room, and using a Big Brother-style voiceover to convey useful information.

Tips include who to call should there be any problems with the laundry equipment, and a reminder to carry coins as there will be no change given on site.

The university’s Marketing Officer for Student Living, Teresa Walter, said: “We are really pleased with the film, it delivers serious messages in an innovative and fun way.

“We are confident that students will take in the information because it is presented in such an entertaining way.”

The Maclagan Men were successful due to their flexible approach, strong commercial understanding and wealth of great ideas - not to mention their technical expertise.

Formed in 1988, the Stoke-on-Trent company has carved out a reputation for producing films with unusual angles.
