Christmas Light Displays Get 3D Projection Treatment at Texas Church

Christmas light displays have gone high-tech at Whites Chapel United Methodist Church, Southlake, Texas, with a 3D projection mapping display that turns the front of the church into a giant projection screen for a joyous and colorful Celebration of Light.

Online PR News – 08-December-2011 – Southlake, TX Christmas light displays at churches run from ho hum to inspirational, but Whites Chapel United Methodist Churchs Celebrate the Light display has people gawking and asking in amazement, How did they do that!

Each evening between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (Central Time) the front face of this megachurch becomes a giant 3D projection screen for a display of Christmas lights that looks more like a Broadway or Disneyland production than traditional Christmas light displays.

3D projection mapping technology animates stationary objects with 3D video, making whole buildings appear to move in time to music and sound effects. The result is a remarkably engaging experience.

Whites Chapels Celebrate the Light was the dream of the churchs director of creative arts, Tim Georgeff. It was made possible with equipment loan and staff assistance from a church member whose company stages high-tech productions internationally.

"The idea behind 'Celebrate the Light' was to go beyond traditional Christmas light displays to create an event to draw people in from throughout the community," Georgeff said. "The show is a gift to our neighbors, and is a great way to invite people to share in the joy of Christmas and hear about what makes this holiday so special. And who doesnt love Christmas lights?"

Celebrate the Light has earned rave reviews from the community. It is building an international audience of Christmas lights seekers, as well, thanks to a You Tube video that presents the full six-minute video and sound track in high-definition. The music is from the churchs 2010 Christmas Musical Experience services.

Georgeff said the 3D projection mapping is a natural extension of the churchs indoor music and light services each Christmas season. Whites Chapel uses a mix of contemporary and classical music, staged with carefully designed lighting and actors to offer a worship experience that immerses the congregation in joy of the Christmas season.

Church members hope the outdoor Christmas light displays will attract more people to its popular Christmas Musical Experience services Dec. 10 and 11.

This years presentation, Born Where the Shadows Lie, will be streamed live on the churchs website at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, as well as 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, Central Time. The Celebrate the Light outdoor Christmas lights will be presented each evening through Christmas Eve.
