GE Foundation Donates $4 Million to the Robin Hood Foundation to Support Hurricane Sandy Relief

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, GE (NYSE: GE) today gave $4 million to the Robin Hood Foundation to support relief and recovery efforts under way in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. These funds are expected to be used for longer-term housing, physical and mental health needs, food bank support and local economic recovery in impacted communities where the Robin Hood Foundation determines the need is greatest.

“Since our initial $1.25 million donation in the days following Hurricane Sandy, we have been staying in touch with national and local nonprofit organizations to understand where GE might be able to do more,” said Bob Corcoran, president of the GE Foundation. “We know from our experience with other disasters including Hurricane Katrina, the 9-11 attacks, and now Hurricane Sandy that often the greatest need is surfaced long after the immediate shock wears off. That is often when some of the harder work begins. Our employees, customers and neighbors were affected by this storm and we know that the work of the Robin Hood Foundation will help the community at large cope with the aftermath of Sandy.”

David Saltzman, executive director of the Robin Hood Foundation, said, “We are thrilled to have such generous support from the GE Foundation. For more than a decade, GE has been a trusted partner and long-time supporter of non-profit organizations both here and around the world. GE is committed to disaster relief in the immediate aftermath and also over the long term, consistently supporting communities as they move forward in their recovery.”

The GE Foundation is also supporting the charitable efforts of employees and retirees with a 100% match of funds to qualified relief organizations. The GE Foundation created its matching gift program in 1954 to support employees in their personal philanthropy by providing a dollar-for-dollar match. Separate from the GE Foundation but also in support of Hurricane Sandy, GE is supporting 12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief at the $500,000 level.
