PR Log - Mar 25, 2013 - The connections between the harsh realities of adult life and how they relate to a child’s world are explored with deftness and insight as author Wilfried Voss takes readers through some of literature’s most beloved fantasy lands in his new adult novel “Painted Wings and Giants’ Rings” (ISBN 9781938581069, Copperhill Media, 2012).

Roger Wilkinson is a businessman haunted by childhood memories and his ultimate fear that he will in some way hurt his children as he was once hurt. However, when Roger falls into a dangerous coma after a car accident, only his children are able to save him.

In “Painted Wings and Giants’ Rings,” author Wilfried Voss has created an insightful look into a child’s world and how it relates to the harsh realities of adult life. Roger’s children seek to help him, but they can only do so by exploring the world familiar to them—one of fantasy worlds where all things can be righted. And so his children seek to bring Roger to Never-Neverland where no one can die. The children search for their father through their dreams, also traveling to the Island of Humperdinck and the Land of Llangollen, but they have no success.

Meanwhile, Roger is having his own fantasy during his coma—he is on trial and being confronted with his constant focus on his work, his worries about money, and most of all, his impatience and short-temperedness directed at his children. Only when the children realize their father would not be in a child’s but an adult’s fantasy world are they able to make progress, visiting harsher fantasy worlds such as the Island of Shalott and the Isle of Frozen Souls. The children are able to survive these dark places by remaining what they are: Children. In the end, they must apply the full power of childhood against the dark forces of adulthood.

The book’s title is inspired by a line from “Puff the Magic Dragon” about the loss of innocence, when “painted wings and giants’ rings make way for other toys.” In a recent interview with Reader Views, Voss commented about the book, “Too many ‘adulls’ forget their childhood when they deal with their daily challenges without realizing that a healthy portion of childlike thinking might make for a happier life. I tried to emphasize that situation in my book.” Voss has succeeded. “Painted Wings and Giants’ Wings” is a moving tale of a father’s relationship with his children and how fantasy and imagination can bring them closer together.
