Shank’s September Exhibition, “Underneath Anew,” will Feature the Artist’s New Works as Well as Introduce Her to the Canyon Road Gallery.

Pippin Contemporary welcomes abstract artist Stephanie Shank as the newest artist to the Canyon Road gallery. Shank’s work will be formally introduced during an exhibition that will run from September 25th through October 9th. Collectors and the public will also have a chance to meet Shank during the opening reception, which will be held on Friday, September 27th from 5-7 pm.
Shank’s show is a tribute to her mother and fine artist, Leatrice Shank who recently passed away. The artist was first exposed to art through her mother at a young age. On the rare occasion that she had the privilege of seeing her mother paint, Shank was drawn to the craft. She recalls, “Somewhere in that visual memory of her painting – it got me going and it seemed very exciting and cathartic.”
Shank paints with many layers and her physical art is a reflection of the strata of one’s psyche. Just as a person goes in and out of awareness, and feelings are exposed then become hidden again, so is Shank’s artwork a layering of the seen and unseen. A prominent color or mark may become hidden as the process continues. Shank calls her genre ‘Gestural Abstraction.’
Through simply letting her thoughts slip away, Shank creates vibrant abstract acrylic art, and similar to the uncertainty of life, she is always unaware of how a given piece will come to completion. In talking about her craft, Shank likens her paintings to a life cycle. “You can sense that it [the canvas] starts out blank of course, and then as you build, there’s that level of growth – and sometimes the growth is heavy or negative and it no longer suits you…It’s all about the journey and you bump into the feelings as you take the journey – and all the while, you’re looking out for the happy accidents that are going to happen.”
