Smiths Detection Wins First Order for High-Speed Checked Baggage Scanner

Smiths Detection has been awarded its first order for its HI-SCAN 10080 XCT Explosives Detection System (EDS), a recently launched scanner for checked baggage.

The order, granted through its regional authorized partner Aerotech, is from Santiago International Airport in Chile. The airport is expanding and enhancing its security and operational capabilities, including an upgrade to its baggage handling system, because of the rapid expansion in air traffic. After participating in a public tender, the HI-SCAN 10080 XCT was the chosen solution that best meets its needs.

The XCT provides an imaging solution based on Smiths Detection’s dual-energy, dual-view X-ray technology and Computed Tomography (CT) from Analogic Corporation (Nasdaq: ALOG). Its large tunnel opening and fast belt speed of 98 feet per minute (0.5 metres per second) enables up to 1800 bags per hour to be screened.

Having already achieved European Union standard 3 approval, the XCT last year received lab certification from the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) allowing it to be marketed globally outside the US.

Brian Jones, Interim President of Smiths Detection, said: “HI-SCAN 10080 XCT provides an ideal solution for major airports looking to enhance baggage security. It is faster, takes up less space and its dual imaging expedites throughput. We are delighted Santiago Airport will be the first to reap the benefits.”
