Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Launches Logramos® Third Edition to Support Nation’s Growing Population of Spanish-Speaking Learners

Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced the launch of Logramos® TERCERA EDICIÓN, the third edition of its celebrated group-administered achievement test designed specifically for the growing population of native Spanish speakers in the United States.

Today, more than five million English language learners (ELL) are enrolled in grades K-12 in the United States, making them the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. public school population. Among ELL students, 80% cite Spanish as their native language. As communities and classrooms grow and change, so too does the need to ensure that all students receive access to quality content and the opportunity to achieve academic success as they work toward fluency in English.

Logramos, available for grades K-8, reflects the scope and sequence of one of the nation’s most renowned norm-referenced tests, the Iowa Assessments Form E, by measuring critical-thinking skills across the subject areas of Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Logramos also features 2014 empirical norms and comprehensive data measurement and reporting tools available digitally via HMH-Riverside’s web-based DataManagersystem, all of which help provide educators and administrators with a complete picture of student and group achievement and growth over time.

“English language learners deserve the same quality of education as their English-speaking peers,” said Jim Nicholson, President, HMH-Riverside, the Company’s assessment division. “By providing an equitable testing experience, Logramos enables educators to measure what students know, independent of the language they speak.”

Logramos content, which aligns with state and national standards (including the Common Core State Standards), instructional materials, and curricular frameworks used in today’s U.S. classrooms, extends beyond translation into passages and items adapted specifically for Spanish-speaking students. Incorporating authentic Spanish texts, cultural sensitivities, and linguistically relevant content, the development team, comprised entirely of native Spanish-speaking scholars, used test items from the Iowa Assessments to guide adaptation of the material. This approach ensures an equitable test experience that includes attention to Spanish language distinctions in punctuation, accentuation, verb formation, and more.
