Simon Ourian, Kim Kardashian's Cosmetic Surgeon Issues a Warning to All Cosmetic Surgery Patients

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a report on August 5, 2014, detailing the unapproved use of the hyaluronic acid product called Expression as an injectable dermal filler. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills comments on the report and issues a warning to all patients interested in dermal filler injections.

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 09/19/2014 -- U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a report titled “Adverse Events Associated with Use of Enhancement Medical's "Expression" Intranasal Splint as a Dermal Filler.” The report details adverse reactions resulting from the unapproved use of the hyaluronic acid product Expression as an injectable dermal filler. These adverse reactions include bruising, swelling, lumps, discoloration, and nodules. Hyaluronic acid based products with FDA approval for cosmetic use include Voluma, Perlane, Restylane, and Juvederm.

On the February 23, 2014 episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians, Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, performed a laser stretch mark removal treatment on Kim Kardashian.

“Unfortunately I’m no longer surprised when a back alley charlatan tries to take advantage of consumers with counterfeit products or uses a product such as Expressions unsafely,” says Dr. Ourian. “But it’s especially disappointing to learn from the FDA report that physicians have been warned to discontinue this unapproved and unsafe use of Expression.”

The FDA issued this report to notify consumers interested in dermal filler injections and the doctors that provide these injections. Expression is approved for use as an intranasal splint that is injected post-operatively. Used as directed, Expression’s hyaluronic acid functions as a lubricating gel. Expression does not have FDA approval for use as an injectable dermal filler, a Class III medical device according to the FDA. Manufacturers of Class III medical devices are required to submit clinical data supporting the safety and effectiveness of their products prior to marketing. Enhancement Medical LLC, the manufacturer of Expression, has never submitted this data to the FDA.

“It seems that it will always be the case that some people will risk their safety to save a few bucks in the name of beauty,” says Dr. Ourian. “This report is another reminder that patients must be the ultimate protectors of their own health,” says Dr. Ourian.
