The New York Times to Provide One Week of Free Unlimited Access to NYT Now in Honor of National News Engagement Day

The New York Times (NYTimes.com) today announced that it would offer a week of free unlimited access to NYT Now in coordination with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s (AEJMC) inaugural National News Engagement Day.

AEJMC has marked Tuesday, Oct. 7 as National News Engagement day to encourage awareness about the importance of being informed, to help people of all ages discover the benefits of news and to educate the public about the principles and process of journalism.

From 12:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Oct. 7 through 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 13, all current NYT Now users and anyone who downloads the app will be able to read an unlimited amount of articles in the NYT Now app for iPhone, regardless of their subscription status.

Dean Baquet, executive editor, The New York Times said, “We hope that allowing unrestricted access to NYT Now helps raise awareness of the important role of journalism, especially during such a turbulent time across the globe.”

“Free access to NYT Now this week raises awareness about the importance of engaging with news and being informed,” said Paula Poindexter who created National News Engagement Day as one of her initiatives as president of AEJMC, the association of journalism and communication educators, media professionals, and graduate students. “I hope everyone downloads NYT Now on National News Engagement Day and uses it throughout the week. A week’s free access to this cool news app that The New York Times created to engage the mobile-first Millennial generation helps us achieve the goals of this day that we’ve set aside to read, watch, tweet, like, share and talk about news.”

Cliff Levy, editor of NYT Now, added, “NYT Now is an engaging experience for news consumers who want to stay informed while they are on the go. It features hand-selected and summarized stories, along with our Briefing tip sheets and links to the best stories from around the web. With NYT Now, you can quickly catch up on the essential news, at a time when social media makes it more difficult to weed out what stories really matter.”

The NYT Now app can be downloaded for free on the App Store. To engage in National News Engagement Day use #newsengagementday and follow @newsengagement and @NYTNow on Twitter.
