HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair to Feature Record Number of Exhibitors

Smart Glasses, Fashion Brands in Focus at Fair

Hong Kong, Oct 20, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - The 22nd HKTDC Hong Kong Optical Fair is expected to welcome a record number of over 700 exhibitors from 5-7 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). The fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association (HKOMA), will display the latest trends and new technologies in the optical industry.

Speaking at today's press conference to announce details of the Optical Fair, Sophia Chong, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC said: "Hong Kong is a leader in the international optical industry. Our city is among the leading exporters of spectacles and frames with the value of Hong Kong's exports of optical products amounting to HK$9.6 billion in the first eight months of 2014. Our most important export markets are the United States, followed by the Chinese mainland and Europe."

Smart Ideas

A highlight of this year's fair is the participation of Rochester Optical, a frame and optics manufacturer, who will exhibit, for the first time in Asia, its range of smart glasses including Smart Frames(TM) for Google Glass and other renowned brands. Rochester Optical will also showcase the Chimmm collection as part of its collaboration with renowned Hong Kong designer Simon Chim. This includes a variety of prescription eyeglass frames for the Vuzix(R) M100 and Google Glass.

A total of more than 190 brands will participate at the fair's "Brand Name Gallery", including Chrome Hearts (US), Converse (US), Dita (US), Frederic Beausoleil (France), FYSH UK (Canada), Hachill (Hong Kong), ic! Berlin (Germany), Italian Independent (Italy), Markus-t (Germany), Mykita (Germany), Muzik (Korea), Orgreen (Denmark), Superdry (UK), Tony Same (Hong Kong) and more.

Focus Areas

The fair displays the latest styles of frames, spectacles and related products through various product zones, ranging from kids' eyewear to optometric instruments, equipment and machinery. The fair will also host special events including eyewear parades at the Brand Name Gallery.

New Trends

Major industry events will explore new trends and innovations in the optical industry. The 12th Hong Kong Optometric Conference on 6-7 November adopts the theme of "Development of Optometry for the Future". The event will feature experts from the United Kingdom and the United States as well as Hong Kong and Singapore. There will also be a seminar on "New Marketing Strategies in Eyewear" and a Buyer Forum on "Business Opportunities in Emerging Markets" with both events taking place on 5 November.

And The Winner Is...

During today's press conference, winners of the 16th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition were announced. The theme of the competition this year was "Retro". Winner of the Open Group was Siu Wing-kit with his design concept based on a 1970s camera lens, which also claimed the Creativity Award and Made-to-Sell Award. Li Ka-sing was the 1st Runner-up with his design featuring magnetic hinges with changeable temples to suit the wearer's personal preference. In the Student Group category, Wong Hiu-tung was crowned Champion with her design entitled Infinity, which was inspired by the spectacles worn by the last Chinese emperor Puyi. Chan Chung-yan was the 1st Runner-up with her design entitled Yearning For Childhood. The winning and finalist products will be on display at the fairground from 5-7 November.
