An Open Letter from CAHK to Students and Hong Kong Residents

Hong Kong, Oct 30, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - Dear Students and Hong Kong Residents,

CAHK is an association for Hong Kong's communications industries. We believe that communications must, above all, be effective. We truly believe open, honest and rational communications is the way forward, to ultimately bring the current Occupy Movement incident to an end.

The Occupy Movement is undoubtedly an unprecedented historic event of Hong Kong in our recent history. Whilst it may have its noble intentions, it is also apparent that this exercise is causing tremendous social conflict and is negatively affecting people's livelihoods across broad segments of society.

Over decades, Hong Kong grew from a humble fishing village into the best Communications Hub in Asia. This was by no means due to luck or chance. The reason Hong Kong's "Lion Rock Spirit" enabled many generations of residents to transform this barren rock into a world-class city, is because Hong Kong's Rule of Law has been respectfully observed and followed. Without this well-structured legal framework, Hong Kong's law and order, and indeed its commerce, would not have thrived to such impressive heights. Hong Kong is geographically small, but internationally well known. Even today, with so many other cities vying for the position, Hong Kong remains as the choice for entrepreneurs seeking the easiest way to do business, as the gateway to China and the hub of Asia. This uniqueness stems from our highly adaptive yet diligent residents and culture as well as our observance of the Rule of Law.

We are also proud of Hong Kong's hard-working and innovative spirit, which has driven this city to lead the world in pioneering many telecommunications "firsts." Hong Kong is an important international technical and communications hub, with a steady, hardworking and responsible community of skilled ICT professionals. All of them have been putting tremendous efforts all these decades to sustain Hong Kong's prestigious situation and their efforts are well-recognized.

However, this "Pearl of the Orient" is in grave danger of being adversely affected by the Occupy Movement. Our society is being slowly torn apart by the current incident, with families and friends, and across industries, all affected. Until the current incident, this city has always had in place a solid legal system, proven to work all these decades, and neither any organization nor any individual should be above it. But now, the incident is shaking Hong Kong's core values and diminishing its economic competitive position in the world.

Quoting President John F. Kennedy, in a broadcasted address he made in the fall of 1962: "The observance of the law is the eternal safeguard of liberty and defiance of the law is the surest road to tyranny. ...For in a government of laws and not of men, no man, however prominent or powerful, and no mob, however unruly or boisterous, is entitled to defy a court of law. If this country should ever reach a point where any man or group of men by force or threat of force could long defy the commands of our court (and our Constitution), then no law would stand free from doubt, no judge would be sure of his writ, and no citizen would be safe from his neighbors."

The Occupy Movement has persisted for a month now, and has reached an impasse. It is high time for the situation to evolve and move on. Students and residents supporting Occupy have already gotten the attention of Hong Kong, Beijing and rest of the world, without causing even one broken store window, one burning car, or one fatality. If the incident persists, this unblemished record may no longer hold.

We at CAHK urge the students and fellow Hong Kong residents of the Occupy Movement to cease their actions before the situation causes irreparable damage to Hong Kong's economy and reputation. Let us join hands and work with each other, instead of against each other.

Sincerely,

Communications Association of Hong Kong
