PowerFilm, Inc. Solar Charges Signal Snowboard

By: PRLog
PRLog - Oct. 29, 2014 - AMES, Iowa -- PowerFilm, Inc., a manufacturer of high-quality, thin-film solar products located in the United States, has partnered with Signal Snowboards, a manufacturer of a full line of high-performance snowboards located in Huntington Beach, CA.  The result of the collaboration between these companies is the Solar Snowboard. But, this is not your typical snowboard. It is a snowboard that comes along with its own power bank that allows the snowboarder to charge a variety of electronic devices at the same time they are enjoying weaving their way across snow covered mountain slopes.  The ability to charge communication and other electronic devices is even more important for the backwoods snowboarding enthusiast because it provides a source for ensuring safety equipment like radios and avalanche beacons maintain their charge.

The solar snowboard was born from the “Every Third Thursday” ritual implemented by the Signal Snowboards leadership team to inspire creativity and innovation. The PowerFilm sales team worked with Signal Snowboards’ development team to provide the solar material that would bring concept to reality. Dave Lee, CEO of Signal Snowboard selected PowerFilm’s solar material for the “unsurpassed durability and flexibility it provides.” Dave and his team wanted a product that would not impact the flex of the snowboard and the solar PowerFilm, Inc. produces provided Dave and his team with exactly what they were looking for.  Dave shared his vision for the future of the relationship between the two companies by stating, “I envision the partnership between Signal Snowboards and PowerFilm just getting stronger as word spreads and demand for the product increases.” Ron Mason, Vice President of Sales at PowerFilm, Inc. shared his enthusiasm by saying, “Flexibility was critical in Signal Snowboards’ project because it allowed the snowboard to function, and flex, just like a normal board does. Being able to capture the power of the sun not only allows users to keep their phones, action cameras and other electronics powered up, it can be used to help prolong the battery life of safety equipment. We pride ourselves on our ability to customize here at PowerFilm and it has been a lot of fun working with everyone at Signal Snowboards to see this project come to fruition."

Signal Snowboards has already started production and has shipped a number of snowboards to distributors throughout the globe; including Korea, Japan, Russia and China. In the U.S., the boards can be purchased directly through Signal Snowboards.

Signal Snowboard’s design illustrates the adaptability of PowerFilm’s thin-film flexible solar panels to a variety of applications. When exposed to daylight, the panels provide a continuous charge, ensuring ample power to maintain cell phone charge or a variety of other small electronic devices. PowerFilm’s Amorphous silicon solar cell technology performs reliably even in low and indirect lighting conditions.
