Design Contest to Spotlight New Young Hong Kong Talent

Margareta van den Bosch Among High-Profile Judging Panel

Hong Kong, Dec 15, 2014 - (ACN Newswire) - The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers' Contest 2015 (YDC), organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be held on 20 January at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Sixteen finalists will showcase their creative concepts on stage, competing for four award categories: Contemporary Day-wear Group, Party & Evening-wear Group, Best Accessories Design Award and Overall Winner.

This year's contest welcomes H&M Creative Advisor Margareta van den Bosch of Sweden as the VIP Judge. She will come to Hong Kong for the final and share her creative insights and ideas with the finalists. Ms van den Bosch is a graduate of the renowned Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. As Chief Designer at H&M between 1986 and 2007, she built up a team of more than 100 designers at H&M's headquarters in Stockholm and established the brand's creative direction. Ms van den Bosch was behind H&M's collaboration with some of today's leading designers and international labels, including Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Roberto Cavalli, Lanvin, Versace, Comme des Garcon, Marni and Alexander Wang. She has also successfully brought luxury brands to the mass retail market.

Ms van den Bosch continues to collaborate with international fashion brands. She is also active in the fashion and art scene, teaches at Beckmans College of Design and is involved in identifying young design talent by visiting gala shows of different fashion schools. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Illis Quorum medal from the Government of Sweden in 2013 - the highest award bestowed on Swedish citizens by the government - for her outstanding contribution to the country's culture, science and society.

Impressive Judging Panel

In addition to VIP Judge Ms van den Bosch, the judging panel comprises senior representatives from the industry and the media as well as local designers. Shirley Chan, Chairman of the HKTDC Garment Advisory Committee, is Chief Judge. Other panel members include Gaku Mizoguchi, representative of Parco Co Ltd in Japan; local designer Lu Lu Cheung; Deborah Cheng, Vice President, Marketing & International Business, i.t apparels Ltd; fashion stylist and image consultant Grace Lam and Gloria Lam, Editor-in-Chief, Elle Magazine. The judging criteria is based on creativity and originality, market potential, workmanship, use of fabrics and overall visual appeal of the work. A new Best Accessories Design Award is added this year under the sponsorship of i.t apparels Ltd to recognise excellence in the design of footwear and accessories.

As well as announcing this year's YDC winners, there will also be a display of the latest creations from three previous YDC winners, Seth Yeung, Matt Hui and Nelson Leung.

YDC Fosters Local Design Talent

YDC was established in 1977 to cultivate and promote a new generation of fashion design professionals. As Hong Kong evolves into a hub for design and leading brands, YDC's role has extended beyond identifying new talent to becoming a launch pad for new local fashion brands. Ten recent YDC winners, who have started their own labels, will participate in the concurrent HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter and HKTDC World Boutique, Hong Kong from 19-22 January at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The 10 designers are Kenax Leung, Mountain Yam, Seth Yeung, Derek Chan, Sandra Chau, Aries Sin, Yannes Wong, Nelson Leung, Walter Kong and Matt Hui.
