In honor of its 125th anniversary, Northern Trust created a special $1.25 million fund to support education, in addition to approximately $15 million donated to charitable causes annually.
The global financial services firm announced recipients of the grants designed to support education for disadvantaged young people. The funding will support causes from early childhood education to college preparation, reaching more than 140,000 students facing significant economic, intellectual and physical barriers to success.
“We have spent much of the past year celebrating Northern Trust’s 125-year history, from its founding as a local institution to its current position as a trusted global financial services provider,” Northern Trust Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frederick H. Waddell said. “I’m proud of our ability to invest in the lives of young people and to help them fully reach their potential. Education is an issue that affects all of us and is critical to building successful families and communities.”
For the company-wide initiative, Northern Trust engaged employees in the referral process and designated five regional committees across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and North America to lead the review and selection of its final grantees. Employees conducted site visits to nearly 60 organizations before selecting the final 26 based on their alignment with designated guidelines and the impact each grant will make.
These extraordinary programs include Classroom, Inc. (New York, NY), which uses technology-based games to teach literacy and foster collaboration in New York Public Schools; Communities in Schools of Greater Tarrant County (Fort Worth, TX), providing in-school counseling and dropout prevention to at-risk high school students; and the Early Learning Initiative (Dublin and Limerick, Ireland), addressing academic underachievement by engaging parents and their young children, starting at two years old.
