PRLog - Aug. 6, 2015 - NEW YORK -- Today, almost 40 years after the Chernobyl disaster, the contamination remains every bit as lethal as the day the accident occurred. In fact, in a New York Times article, the nuclear poisons in the air, land and water were described as “…persisting for hundreds of years.” Children, whose growing bodies are the most vulnerable to the contamination, are at grave risk. The only way to save them is to remove them from the poisoned environment they are exposed to daily. Chabad's Children of Chernobyl (CCOC), founded in response to the devastating nuclear disaster, is a not-for-profit organization that evacuates children from the radioactive Chernobyl region. CCOC provides them with critical medical care, new homes and an excellent education in Israel.

Brian Mehling, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, philantropist, chairman of the board of the Blue Horizon Charitable Foundation (BHCF) and ardent supporter of many charitable organizations worldwide, has been supporting the CCOC for more than 10 years. BHCF is dedicated to increasing the awareness of global inequalities in healthcare, as well as providing charitable medical care and education to adults and children in impoverished areas. The foundation raises capital in order to support medical centers and clinics by providing medicines vital to basic human survival, by performing advanced medical treatments otherwise not accessible to certain geographic regions, and supports children around the world who have been orphaned as a result of disease and/or war.

In order to raise awareness of these situations, BHCF produces documentary films that bring much needed attention to the plight of those with limited or no access to healthcare. The provision of these resources to less developed areas enables the medically underserved to benefit from high quality care and treatment. Dr. Brian Mehling’s film production company Industrial Motion Pictures (IMP) in association with Mehling Studios brings creative and innovative films to life. IMP has been associated with films such as:Tiny Tears, Italy’s Forgotten Earthquake, BreadCrumbs, Dead Calling, and A Smile for Bow.

Esti Herman, the executive director of CCOC said, “We are working diligently, as we have for over 20 years, to save as many children as we possibly can. It is our supporters, people like Dr. Mehling, who enable us to airlift the children to safety providing them with the medical attention they need, the emotional support they crave, and the education they so deserve to grow up healthy and strong.”

"We are very grateful for all the help that Dr. Mehling and BHCF has provided us over the years. We appreciate our partnership and look forward to working together for many years to come," said Mrs. Herman.

Dr. Mehling stated, “It is an honor and privilege to be involved with CCOC. These children really need our help. In addition, I want to thank everyone who partnered with us on our journey to help people across the globe. For without you, CCOC would not be able to provide the resources, raise the awareness, or provide the treatments that have touched and changed so many children's lives. There is a bright future ahead of us and together, we will continue to enhance the lives of so many people."

The Blue Horizon Charitable Foundation (BHCF) is a recognized 501(c)(3) organization, dedicated to increasing the awareness of global inequalities in healthcare, as well as providing charitable medical care and education to adults and children in impoverished areas. The foundation raises capital in order to support medical centers and clinics by providing medicines vital to basic human survival, by performing advanced medical treatments otherwise not accessible to certain geographic regions, and to finance research and development in stem cell therapies and cellular regenerative medicine. BHCF also supports children around the world who have been orphaned as a result of disease and/or war. In order to raise awareness of these situations, BHCF produces documentary films that bring much needed attention to the plight of those with limited or no access to healthcare. The provision of these resources to less developed areas enables the medically underserved to benefit from high quality care and treatment. Chabad's Children of Chernobyl (CCOC), founded in response to the devastating nuclear disaster in 1986, is a not-for-profit organization that evacuates children from the radioactive Chernobyl region. CCOC provides them with critical medical care, new homes and an excellent education in Israel. CCOC also serves those currently living in the contaminated areas by providing medicine and advanced medical equipment. The primary goal of the organization is to rescue the children of Chernobyl, relocating them to Israel, the only country in the world that accepts them on a permanent basis. From a humanitarian perspective, the process is simple: rescue as many children as possible. From a legal perspective, it is a constant battle. Temporary “cleansing vacations” from the contaminated region help to an extent, but permanent evacuation is the only option for the most complete recoveries. Additionally, CCOC has trained local physicians to specialize in radiation-induced illnesses and has built a mammography clinic to help combat the artificially high rates of breast cancer in the area.
