Cutting Back on Drinking may Help Reduce Cancer Risk, Says Chapters Capistrano

Alcohol can impair proper cell function and, according to a new study, even light drinking has its risks, especially when it comes to certain cancers, cautions Chapters Capistrano.

Over the years, there have been contradictory reports about the effects of alcohol on the body. Some tout that drinking wine is good for the heart while others say that it’s less beneficial than initially thought. Researchers are continually exploring new theories and seeking to draw connections between alcohol and health. A recent study finds that even minimal amounts of alcohol may increase risk for certain types of cancer. Chapters Capistrano has released a statement to the press regarding these findings and the importance of moderating drinking.

“People’s bodies respond differently to alcohol,” says Susie Shea, co-owner of the drug and alcohol rehab center in Orange County. “It depends on a variety of factors such as genetic makeup, gender, body composition, how much they’ve had to eat, and more. But one thing that has always been clear is that drinking comes with risks. It causes damage both internally and externally.”

There have been numerous studies that have found the combination of smoking and drinking contribute to increased cancer risk, but this latest study also looks at drinking as an independent factor. More than 135,000 participants were surveyed every four years for up to 30 years. Results showed that “over the 30-year follow-up period, 19,269 cancers were diagnosed in women and 7,571 cancers were diagnosed in men.”

One of the main things they were interested in researching was the impact of light to moderate drinking – defined as “up to one standard drink, or 15g of alcohol, a day for women and up to two standard drinks, or 30g of alcohol, for men.” It is already well known that heavy drinking can increase cancer risk. What researchers found was that light to moderate drinking was associated with a greater risk of alcohol-related cancers in women; particularly breast cancer. In men, the risk of alcohol-related cancer was elevated in those who had a history of smoking.

“Even though standard guidelines recommend no more than one drink per day for women and two for men, that does not mean that even these limits don’t come with risks, including cancer,” says Shea. “The best way to reduce risk is to abstain from drinking all together or at least cut back to only an occasional drink. There is nothing wrong with having alcohol-free days and finding other ways to celebrate, socialize, or unwind.”

Shea encourages people to keep track of their drinking so that they become more aware of how much they are actually consuming on a weekly basis. “It’s easy to underestimate how much you have had by the end of the week,” notes Shea. “If you do notice that your drinking is getting out of hand or becoming problematic, it’s important to seek treatment before things escalate. At Chapters Capistrano, we work with clients at all stages, whether they are new to treatment, trying again, or could benefit from a 7- or 14-day detox program.” Alcohol can impact all facets of a person’s health and life, but there is help available to facilitate long-term recovery.
