Amicus House Discuss Finding a Great Alcohol and Drug Abuse Recovery Program that Works

Metrics cannot always be compared directly between programs because patients have individual issues and experience recovery differently. When a recovery program has existed for some time, and has a good reputation in the community, many people assume that the patients who are treated in the program achieve sobriety easily and avoid relapse.

After all, that’s the expected outcome of a recovery program, and how most people would measure successful recovery treatment. However, not every recovery program operates on the same foundation, and success can be measured very differently by different programs.  Metrics cannot always be compared directly between programs because patients have individual issues and experience recovery differently.  Also, different programs focus on many types of addiction treatment, with specialties in various therapies and approaches to addiction recovery.

With that in mind, the most realistic expectations of recovery and remission can be achieved when a patient selects a program that works with experienced, trained and compassionate counselors and recovery treatment professionals.  A program that can attract and retain talented, well regarded staff who are up to date and highly educated in the field of recovery, is very likely to have a high rate of success in patient treatment.  One means of measuring success in recovery is the length of time patients who successfully complete the entire treatment program are able to maintain sobriety.  A program which can say its graduates have recovered and maintained their drug or alcohol free, sober lifestyle for more than two years, is a program which has developed a strong basis in therapeutic and customized approaches to each patient.

A quality drug and alcohol abuse recovery program will be licensed and certified.  Licensing is generally conferred by a state or regional government entity, and gives the program the right to operate.  The certification process is a separate credential, and not every treatment program will be able to claim a certification.  While many programs will employ licensed and certified or degreed professionals, there are not many programs that can claim certifications.  Recovery programs which are certified have met and demonstrated standards of ethics and have the ability to demonstrate appropriate treatment of medical emergency issues.

Of course, a program which has a certification in addition to employing and partnering with certified, licensed and degreed professionals is the most likely to offer the highest quality of care to its recovery patients.  Programs that should be considered the premier opportunities for recovery patients will emphasize a caring and compassionate environment in which there is no judgement, but a focus instead on wellness and growth.  The staff and other patients will be expected to uphold the rules and regulations of the recovery program, and also provide each other with encouragement and support during the difficulties that are inherent in recovery.  A drug and alcohol addiction recovery program that deserves consideration will also be transparent in their treatment methods, and offer the inbound patient considering recovery services plenty of information about the entire recovery process.  This helps dispel fear and bring the patient into the recovery program with an open mind.
