Delfa categorically rejects the allegations being made about its alleged involvement in relabeling or mislabeling of expired food products, their further retail and distribution.
As one of the largest Latvian suppliers of chilled and frozen fish to Europe and North America, SIA Delfa does not engage in retail or wholesale distribution of fresh, frozen, cured, canned or processed meats and lard. Consequently, SIA Delfa has never delivered any meats, meat products or ready-to-eat meals that may contain pork or any ingredients derived from pork, beef or poultry products either directly or indirectly to any school or catering company.
Delfa has clear principles which guide the response across the entire company to government demands for customer information for both food safety and public health issues. We take our commitments to our customers and to compliance with applicable law very seriously and have therefore immediately provided all necessary documents to the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) to confirm that SIA Delfa was not (and is not) in possession of seven (7) tons of allegedly expired frozen fish. Thus, contrary to media reports, the expiry date of the frozen fish inventory is October 2016 and it can be legally sold as it poses no health risk to consumers.
Finally, as an operator of the multi-tenant cold storage facilities in Riga, SIA Delfa is not responsible for its tenants’ compliance with the European or national labeling rules and adherence to the process maintained by the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service for the evaluation and approval of meat and poultry product labels.
SIA Delfa cannot offer further comment as it is constrained in what it can say about matters that are the subject of a pending administrative inquiry.
