Transparency International-USA Honors President Jimmy Carter and PepsiCo with Integrity and Corporate Leadership Awards

Transparency International-USA (TI-USA), the international leader in anti-corruption advocacy in government, business and international development, today announced that President Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States, is the recipient of the 2015 TI-USA Integrity Award for his contributions to furthering integrity and transparency in government and lifelong dedication to the advancement of fair elections worldwide.

PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) is receiving the TI-USA Corporate Leadership Award for its commitment to creating an ethical culture and upholding high standards of integrity, transparency and accountability.

“President Carter has devoted his life to promoting honest government and free and fair elections,” said Alan Larson, Chair of the TI-USA Board of Directors. “From reforming the appointments process for federal judges in the United States to observing elections in scores of countries, President Carter has shown the character, perseverance and initiatives that will lead us closer to a world free of corruption.”

Claudia Dumas, President and CEO of TI-USA, added, “President Carter has been an unrelenting champion of accountability, openness and integrity in government. The high standards he advances and has established for himself continue to inspire leaders and reformers around the world.”

In addition to making the appointment process for federal judgeships more open, President Carter’s significant achievements include reforming the federal civil service; requiring policy-making officials to disclose their financial interests in order to combat conflicts of interest; and signing the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act prohibiting businesses from bribing foreign government officials to obtain or retain business. As a private citizen, President Carter has, through The Carter Center, mediated election disputes and facilitated the peaceful transfer of power in many nations.

PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest food and beverage companies, sets practices in anti-corruption compliance that have an impact on the more than 200 countries and territories where it does business. Through its domestic and international Control Environment Councils and audit processes, PepsiCo monitors anti-bribery and corruption risks on a cross-functional basis. PepsiCo’s Global Code of Conduct addresses such issues as bribery and conflict of interest. In addition to Code of Conduct training, all PepsiCo salaried employees with internet access take a separate on-line anti-bribery course each year and certify to their compliance with PepsiCo’s anti-bribery policy. PepsiCo achieves 100 percent completion rates in both the Code of Conduct and anti-bribery courses. PepsiCo’s Supplier Code of Conduct is based on standards promulgated by the United Nations Global Compact and the International Labour Organization. In 2014, PepsiCo provided training on the Code to 1,500 third parties worldwide.
