15th Boston Turkish Film Festival Announces Lineup

March 9, 2016 - PRLog -- The Boston Turkish Film Festival presents 21 films by leading and emerging Turkish filmmakers as its 15th edition is set to run from March 17th to April 3rd at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

The festival will kick off with Ivy (Sarmaşık) by Tolga Karaçelik, which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

Director Çağan Irmak receives the 2016 Boston Turkish Film Festival Excellence in Turkish Cinema Award, which is in its 10th year, at a ceremony following the screening of his latest film, A Unique Life (Nadide Hayat), in recognition of his contributions to Turkish Cinema.

More than 14 filmmakers and actors will travel to this year’s Boston Turkish Film Festival from Turkey and Europe, with most of their films making their North American and US premieres.

The festival will offer a vast array of films in terms of their themes, nine making their North American and US premieres, four their East Coast premieres. Q&A sessions with directors will follow film screenings. Six out of 16 films to be screened have received awards from SIYAD — the Turkish Film Critics Association. According to Erkut Gömülü, founder and director of the festival, 25% of the features in the program are by women filmmakers.

There will be 16 feature films in the festival program: “Ivy”(Sarmaşık) by Tolga Karaçelik, “My Grandfather’s People” (Dedemin İnsanları) and “A Unique Life” (Nadide Hayat) by Çağan Irmak, “Rimos and Zimos: Peace in Town” (Rimolar ve Zimolar: Kasabada Barış) by Nermin Er and İsmet Kurtuluş, “Lemonade” (Limonata) by Ali Atay, “Mustang” by Deniz Gamze Ergüven, “Remake, Remix, Rip-Off” (Motör) by Cem Kaya, “Yearning” (Hasret) by Ben Hopkins, “Brother” (Kardeşim Benim) by Mert Baykal, “Until I Lose My Breath” (Nefesim Kesilene Kadar) by Emine Emel Balcı, “Nausea” (Bulantı) by Zeki Demirkubuz, “Cold of Kalandar” (Kalandar Soğuğu) by Mustafa Kara, “Motherland” (Ana Yurdu) by Senem Tüzen, “Snow Pirates” (Kar Korsanları) by Faruk Hacıhafızoğlu, “İstanbul Unveiled” by Şerif Yenen and Levent Ayaşlı, and “Frenzy” (Abluka) by Emin Alper.

Award-winning films of the Boston Turkish Festival’s Documentary and Short Film Competition will be screened and the directors will be presented their awards at a ceremony following film screenings on March 26th. Winners of the Documentary Film Competition are “Migration” (Koçer) by Ramazan Dinler for Best Documentary Jury Award and “Zülfü Livaneli: A Voice Between East and West” (Zülfü Livaneli: Doğu ve Batı Arasında Bir Ses) by Orhan Çalışır, Cengiz Kültür and Dirk Meissner for Best Documentary Audience Award. Winners of the Short Film Competition are “The Next One” (Sıradaki) by Gündüz Sevdi and “Red Light – France is Nice” (Kırmızı Işık – Fransa Çok Güzel) by Yasemin Akıncı for Best Short Film Jury Award, and “The Well” (Kuyu) by Selman Nacar for Best Short Film Audience Award. A panel discussion with the award-winning directors follow the screenings, moderated by Boston Globe film critic Peter Keough.
